WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a focused, dependable individual with the following qualities:- Excellent business writing skills with strong grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy;
- Proven ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines;
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and database systems;
- General knowledge of office practices and procedures – legal office experience is a plus;
- Familiarity with legal terminology, concepts, and research methods preferred;
- Willingness to learn municipal, state, and federal court rules, legislative materials, and related legal resources under attorney guidance.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Law Department offices are currently located at One Sealaska Plaza, Suite 202, in Juneau, Alaska. The Civil Paralegal I has a dedicated private office within the department with a view of Mount Juneau.
- Typical Responsibilities
The Civil Paralegal assists the department’s civil attorneys with civil litigation and administrative appeals. Those responsibilities include preparing and proofreading legal documents, ensuring they conform to court rules and CBJ code; filing documents with the court; organizing and summarizing discovery; and communicating the litigation process to clients and witnesses in layperson’s terms.
The department also receives requests for legal services from other departments. This position assists the civil attorneys by electronically assigning incoming requests to attorneys, monitoring progress of requests, seeking additional information from external agencies and departments as needed, providing document processing support as requested, and keeping attorneys informed of deadlines.
This position also performs some administrative duties, including preparation of travel and training requests for department staff for out-of-state and in-state travel, local training, and online webinars/CLEs; receiving and distributing incoming and outgoing Civil section mail, filing incoming and outgoing documents electronically; and providing basic support to the law office manager and criminal section staff on an as-needed basis.
- Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
Experience:
One (1) year of office clerical experience or six (6) months of legal clerical experience.
Substitution:
Post-secondary or vocational training may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of three (3) semester or four (4) quarter hours of post-secondary education are equal to one month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education are equal to one month of experience.

APSIN Clearance
Please be aware – this position works directly with CBJ systems that may include assistance with a department’s Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). This requires the incumbent to submit to a pre-employment fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with adult criminal convictions will not move forward in the recruitment and selection process. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
