THE JOB:
The Legal Counsel is responsible for managing legal matters for MGM Resorts International and its subsidiaries, with a focus on traditional labor and employment law. Serving as the Legal Department’s primary expert on labor-related issues, this role works closely with the Labor Relations and Strategy teams to lead arbitrations, settlement negotiations, and collective bargaining efforts. In partnership with other team members, the Legal Counsel provides strategic legal advice on employment matters and oversees litigation, including cases managed internally.
THE DAY-TO-DAY:
- The Legal Counsel manages labor and employment law matters, including responding to NLRB Unfair Labor Practice charges and other discrimination, harassment, or retaliation complaints. They provide legal guidance to Human Resources and business units, ensuring compliance with labor policies and collaborating with Centers of Excellence to maintain compliant materials.
- The role involves advising on the interpretation, implementation, and administration of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), drafting relevant memoranda, policies, procedures, and legal documents in alignment with CBA requirements, and representing the company in labor arbitrations, CBA negotiations, and other labor-related proceedings. Legal responsibilities also include preparing responses to legal claims, conducting research, and advising on compliance with relevant laws.
- The Legal Counsel oversees outside counsel, reviews invoices, ensures billing compliance, and provides updates to insurers. They offer strategic legal advice, build relationships with internal teams, and supervise legal staff, ensuring quality work and collaboration. The role requires exercising independent judgment and discretion in handling complex legal issues.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
- Must hold a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
- 6+ years of progressively responsible legal practice.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in traditional labor law.
- Proven expertise in representation before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and other state and federal administrative agencies.
- Demonstrated experience defending public corporations in labor and employment matters.
- Proficiency in handling Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).
- Experience representing organizations in labor-related matters, including labor arbitrations and collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
- Willingness to travel domestically 3-4 times per month.
