Pay Range: $135,000 - $170,000

Position Summary
The Legal Counsel is a valued member of the USA Triathlon Executive Team and is responsible for leading the legal, risk, athlete safety, compliance, and governance affairs of USA Triathlon and USA Triathlon Foundation.
The ideal candidate is a service and solutions driven leader that will show up as a partner to the organization in achieving its strategic priorities, while mitigating risk, advocating, proactively prioritizing athlete safety and well-being, and ensuring the highest level of governance and compliance for the organization.
The Legal Counsel will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with the U.S Center for SafeSport, United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), USADA and other important risk and compliance partners.
This role is highly cross-functional and collaborative by providing well-informed, timely, effective, hands-on and practical guidance to leaders and teammates across the company.
Essential Job Functions
Legal
Legal
- Provide legal counsel and guidance to USA Triathlon Chief Executive Officer, Leadership Team and Board of Directors
- Provide legal counsel and risk analysis on a variety of internal and external matters, organizational strategies and programs
- Draft, review and approve internal and external business policies and processes
- Lead contract negotiations: draft and review vendor, contractor, partner and volunteer agreements, and oversee document retention
- Ensure that the organization remains in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
- Work with High Performance team to draft all athlete selection criteria, athlete and coach policies and procedures
- Advise on all employment related legal matters
- Manage outside counsel when necessary
Risk and Compliance
- Responsible for all USA Triathlon insurance products, services and relationships, which is a primary value proposition for race directors, coaches, clubs and members
- Lead the organization’s athlete wellbeing programs, safety policy development, maintenance and implementation to ensure compliance with USOPC Implementation Guide, and US Center for SafeSport
- Ensure USA Triathlon maintains SafeSport education, training and anti-doping policies, processes, enforcement and oversight
- Accountable for USA Triathlon compliance audits, including oversight of the process and accountability for the outcomes
Governance
- Lead all governance requirements including, but not limited to, board meetings, elections, appeals, hearings, bylaws, and committee oversight
- Maintain high level of governance best practices
- Responsibility for two boards and sets of bylaws

Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in related field and from an accredited law school required.
- Ability to be licensed to practice law in the state of Colorado required.
- Member in good standing of a State Bar Association required.
- 10-plus years of relevant leadership and business experience preferred.

- Travel required for quarterly board meetings and other events and conferences as needed.
- This role is based in office, in Colorado Springs; must be willing to relocate to Colorado Springs, CO, or the surrounding area.
