Program Summary
The mission of the Legal Services team is to provide direct legal services to our most vulnerable community members. We are a multidisciplinary team with Immigration Law, Disability Law, and Family Law units. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with attorneys and legal assistants with varied experiences specialties, credentials, and experiences across these disciplines.


Position Summary
The Supervising Immigration Attorney will lead, train, and supervise a team of up to 4 staff including immigration attorneys, DOJ Accredited Representatives, and legal assistants who share a specialty in immigration law, such as Removal Defense or Affirmative, while self-managing an immigration legal services caseload. This position will support the overall success of the Immigration Legal Services program by collaborating with the Legal Services Sector Manager and the ILS Managing Attorney on the design of effective processes and procedures and communicating with stakeholders.


Essential Functions

  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of up to 4 staff including immigration attorneys, DOJ Accredited Representatives, and legal assistants to provide quality, trauma-informed legal services.
  • Self-manage a legal caseload. Legal services include consultations, legal advice, limited-scope or full-scope representation, etc. The Supervising Immigration Attorney may specialize in one or more of the following focus areas:

o  Removal Defense: Assist clients in their defense against deportation, including the filing of Asylum/Withholding of Removal/Cancellation of Removal/Motions to Change Venue/Prosecutorial Requests/SIJS predicate orders (I589, I360, I765)

o Affirmative: Assist clients in their affirmative immigration matters, including naturalization, adjustment of status, temporary protected status, asylum, family petition, and employment authorization (N-400, I-485, I-821, I-589, I-730, I-765).

  • Conduct performance evaluations.
  • Daily communications and meetings with clients, staff, and USCIS regarding ongoing cases.
  • Record case management data, in a timely manner, in physical files, OneDrive, and LawLab in accordance with laws, industry standards, and IRCO ILS procedures.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the Legal Services Sector Manager with program reporting, including compiling case data and giving input about program narratives, such as client success stories. 
  • Communicate as needed with stakeholders, such as other IRCO sectors, IRCO leadership, Oregon State Bar, Equity Corps of Oregon, etc. regarding program updates, strategy, etc.
  • Provide feedback to the Legal Services Sector Manager about processes and procedures to inform effective program design.
  • Support with the planning of legal clinics, know your rights presentations, and other community education and engagement events.
  • Assist with projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements

  

Education & Experience

MINIMUM JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school

Licensure with the Oregon State Bar or another state bar

3-4 years of experience in immigration law, with at least 2 years of experience as an attorney

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and online legal research


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with immigrant and refugee communities 

Bilingual/bicultural and fluent in a language other than English (Spanish, Dari, Pashto, and Ukrainian are preferred) 

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and online legal research 

Strong attention to detail 

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; self-starting with a flexible growth mindset


Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements

Some physical efforts or manual labor such as lifting, carrying or constant movement.

There is a regular need for assessment of risk, analysis of options and decisions without complete information.

The work environment is usually well protected, free from hazards or obstacles. There is little element of personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are usually comfortable, with only occasional issues, temperature change

The work schedule occasionally fluctuates based on organization or customer needs. This fluctuation may occur with or without prior notice.
