About the Opportunity

The Liability Claims Manager is responsible for the management of a claims department across the FE footprint. The manager must ensure that the rationale for the disposition of a claim is consistent with company procedures and guidelines coupled with the respective state policies and procedures to support the successful defense of the company position and other common bases of litigation. The manager is responsible for the handling of multi-line insurance claims against the company while protecting the company's financial interest.

This position reports to the Associate General Counsel and is part of the Chief Legal Organization. This position will be located with the FirstEnergy Service territory. 

Responsibilities include:

  • The Manager of Liability Claims is responsible for both supervising the claims team and actively participating in day-to-day operations. This role combines leadership with hands-on involvement in claims processing, resolution of complex cases, and direct support of departmental workflows 
  • Responsible for managing a team of claims specialists, providing guidance, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities to ensure high levels of efficiency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction for key stakeholders 
  • Monitoring claims operations practices relative to insurance industry standards
  • Handling of and keeping the staff current on all statutory and procedural policies necessary for multi-line claims handling, including but not limited to property damage, casualty/bodily injury, collection, auto, commercial, etc.
  • Negotiating settlements within the guidelines of FirstEnergy policies
  • Conducting claim reviews and implementing recommendations
  • Supplying and providing claims-related statistics, trends and reports to senior management, Risk Management and other stakeholders as requested
  • Occasionally being involved in other cross-claims specialties involving workers' compensation and employment claims, 
  • Being responsible for the budget and financial management of the claims function
  • Assisting with internal or external audits
  • Traveling throughout the FirstEnergy territory and performing storm duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or prior insurance and/or claims experience
  • Minimum of seven years’ relevant work experience at progressively increasing levels of responsibility and complexity is required
  • Exceptional customer service and transmission and distribution experience
  • Complete understanding of all claims lines
  • In-depth knowledge of claim file handling and legal issues as they relate to claims
  • Able to plan, direct and coordinate activities related to proper claim handling
  • Able to train and supervise claims representatives in all aspects of the claims processes for every line of insurance
  • Able to discern problematic insurance issues, implement/coordinate resolution and follow up as needed to bring claim to a proper conclusion
  • Must be an accomplished contributor, have established internal and external relationships, proven job knowledge and the ability to provide leadership and support to projects, teams and work activities within the region and claims organization
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the language in various legal documents, including but not limited to, contracts, joint use agreements, rights-of-way, easements and releases
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to multi-task and work well under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with all levels of employees and leadership.
  • Desire to learn, grow and work across FirstEnergy, and deliver quality and accurate work within established deadlines.
  • May require irregular work hours and availability after normal work hours to respond to and assist in the investigation of serious incidents
