LEGAL SECRETARY
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is legal secretarial work of a complex and technical nature that involves the operation of a computer work station. The work includes preparing legal briefs, notices and other legal documents. While the ability to exercise independent judgment is a requirement, general supervision is received from an immediate supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Prepares legal briefs, petitions, motions, orders, opinions, notices and other legal documents;
Proofreads such documents which includes the checking of citations in original reference for accuracy and completeness;
Electronically files legal documents with various;
Files, records and dockets all civil cases received at the City, Supreme and/or Federal courts;
Prepares daily civil court calendar and records all dispositions and adjournments;
Prepares vouchers for settlements, and judgments and subpoenas;
Performs a variety of secretarial and general clerical duties of a corresponding degree of difficulty;
Operates a computer and other office machinery and equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of law office methods, procedures, forms and common legal terms;
Good knowledge of business English;
Working knowledge of business arithmetic;
Ability to operate a computer with a high degree of accuracy;
Ability to communicate effectively;
Clerical aptitude;neatness of appearance; Good judgment; tact; courtesy;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
A) Graduation from a recognized secretarial school with specialization in legal secretarial work; or
B) Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma and one (l) year of secretarial experience, six (6) months of which must have been in the legal field; or
C) An equivalent combination of education/training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Salary: $64,637 - $80,048
