Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida, Inc. (CCLA) is a Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funded, non-profit organization. CCLA provides free civil legal services to low-income and other eligible residents of Broward County and is located in Plantation, Florida, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Our mission is to improve the lives of low-income persons in our community through advocacy, education, representation, and empowerment. We provide assistance in the areas of Family Law, Economic Advocacy & Community Health (public benefits), and Senior Law for clients age 60 and older. We believe all individuals are entitled to quality civil legal representation and equal access to justice, regardless of their income. 


Currently CCLA is seeking a Paralegal to work in our Senior Housing Stability Project (SHSP) in the Senior Law Unit to work with seniors 60 and older with free legal assistance regarding housing related issues. The Paralegal will assist with all phases of case work, including initial prescreen of senior applicants, intake and interview of applicants, assist applicants with completing the SHSP forms, and gathering all necessary documents for their case.


Specific Role & Responsibilities:

  • The Paralegal will focus on eligibility screening, under the direct supervision of an attorney and providing legal assistance to seniors with Eviction; nonpayment of rent, termination of tenancy, unlawful detainer, foreclosure, unpaid property taxes and property insurance.
  • Independently manages multiple files through CCLA’s case management system, including drafting case notes, maintaining client documents, and entering daily timekeeping. 
  • Communicates in-person, on the phone, and via email with senior clients, state and federal agencies, case managers from community organizations, and other wraparound service providers.
  • Regularly meets with supervising attorney and other case handlers for case review meetings.
  • Requests and reviews leases, rent receipts, condo and HOA ledgers, mortgage statements, eviction complaints, and other legal documents.
  • Assists clients with completing applications, forms, and filing complaints.
  • Files documents through e-filing portal, copying, and faxing.
  • Maintains data and generates reports for CCLA’s grantors and funders.
  • Performs community outreach events in-person and virtually, as well as, on social media, and conducts educational trainings for staff, clients, and community providers, as needed.
  • Complies with program and grant requirements.
  • Performs other duties as requested by Management, Supervisors, or as required by grant(s).

Position Requirements: 

  • 2 to 5 years of paralegal or eviction proceedings experience preferred. 
  • Candidates with Bachelor’s or Associates degree preferred. Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
  • Paralegal certificate preferred but not required. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Must have the ability to multitask, work efficiently and independently with supervision.
  • Professional demeanor and client-oriented focus.
  • A commitment and passion for working with the low-income community.
  • Due to funder requirements, all applicants must pass a background check before employment begins.
