Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking an Intern for the Regulatory practice to support our Coalition for North American Trade (CNAT) project.
This role will reside in the Washington, DC office with hybrid work capabilities and under general supervision of assigned attorneys and the Practice Director. Akin is looking for a candidate passionate about trade policy and the North American region to support our Coalition for North American Trade (CNAT) project. The Coalition’s goal is to create the atmosphere for the successful review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). CNAT’s members consist of trade associations, companies, and think tanks unified in the goal of ensuring the continuation of the trade agreement that has brought substantial integration to the North American region. CNAT is a unique initiative that brings together former senior government officials from all three countries to safeguard the prosperity that USMCA has brought to the region.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Support the Coalition for North American Trade (CNAT) by drafting policy summaries in response to the trade policy developments that impact the North American region.
- Research and develop data-driven reports about the North American economy and regional integration with think tank partners.
- Analyze policy updates in Canada, Mexico, and the United States that may impact the joint review of the USMCA.
- Policy advocacy deliverable writing on the topic above (e.g., op-eds, talking points, one-pagers, brochures, educational materials).
- Work with former senior government officials in Canada, Mexico, and the United States to shape USMCA advocacy with current government leaders in all three countries.
- Assist with event planning, coordination, and staffing for CNAT projects and activities.
- As requested by the Practice Director or assigned attorneys, coordinate work of other paralegals and/or project assistants or clerical team members
Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
- BA/BS degree required. Master’s level student preferred
- Substantive knowledge of and familiarity with specific areas of law, as required
- Strong analytical and research skills
- Thorough knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate potentially detailed and complex information to others
- Aptitude and willingness to work with complex procedures
- Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to organize self and others
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail
- Ability to read, comprehend and follow instructions
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adjust to changing priorities in a professional manner
