GEICO is seeking an experienced employment lawyer to join its in-house Litigation Department. The Counsel, Employment Litigation will be responsible for the management of employment litigation, agency charges and investigations. This role will partner closely with human resources, finance, and other business teams, while forming part of a collaborative legal department that is valued for its practical advice. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of relevant substantive experience in a large in-house legal department or law firm. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong judgment, a broad range of litigation management experience, and an eagerness to be involved in a dynamic company.
Primary Responsibilities:
Manage and drive strategy for high-profile litigation matters, including complex litigation, employment suits and investigations, administrative charges, and other related matters.
Collaborate with and manage outside counsel.
Advise internal stakeholders on litigation strategy and risks.
Coordinate and actively participate in internal discovery activities in partnership with human resources, finance, and legal management.
Manage legal risks and resolve disputes.
Facilitate the escalation of complex matters to internal stakeholders and referral to outside counsel while maintaining control over case management.
Conduct research as needed to provide relevant advice.
Proactively monitor legislation, regulations, and emerging trends in insurance, claims, privacy, employment law, and litigation procedure.
Counsel and advise GEICO leadership on pending litigation and litigation trends.
Basic Qualifications:
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
5 or more years of managing employment litigation, agency charges and/or investigations at a law firm, government, and/or in-house role.
Experience managing high stakes, complex litigation.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
Ability to balance legal risk and business objectives.
Proficiency in managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience managing employment litigation, investigations, and class actions.
Experience managing government investigations/audits and internal investigations.
Experience working with cross-functional teams, both legal and non-legal
Trial and appellate experience.
Location – Hybrid: This position is a hybrid role and will require 3 days working onsite in the Chevy Chase, MD office.
Annual Salary
$148,000.00 - $230,000.00The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
