The Office of Legal Policy (OLP) supports the Attorney General in judicial selection processes and coordinates regulatory review across DOJ components. OLP also advances technical, scientific, and data-informed policy capacity in support of DOJ's mission to uphold the rule of law, protect civil rights, and ensure national security.
Duties
The Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO)/Chief Science and Technology Advisor (CSTA) serves as the Department's senior executive advisor on artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies, science, data, forensic technology, and related technological innovation. The incumbent is the principal official responsible for coordinating enterprise AI governance, promoting responsible innovation, managing AI risk, and ensuring compliance with applicable law and federal policy guidance.
The CAIO/CSTA represents DOJ's science and technology objectives to federal interagency bodies, industry, academia, international partners, and the public. The position reports to the Assistant Attorney General for OLP or as otherwise delegated.

Conditions of Employment:
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- Veterans' preference is not applicable to the Senior Executive Service.
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st, 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.

For this position, the following Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs) have been established and should be addressed within the resume application.
MTQ 1: Demonstrated executive-level expertise in artificial intelligence governance, evaluation, and enterprise implementation, including oversight of AI, data, or IT modernization initiatives in complex organizations. Must possess deep technical knowledge of AI lifecycle management, model evaluation methodologies, risk mitigation, explainability, bias assessment, human-in-the-loop review processes, and responsible AI governance frameworks. Experience applying cross-functional expertise in mission alignment, data analytics, procurement, and AI enablement to implement large-scale AI strategies, operationalize federal AI policy requirements, and ensure secure, ethical, and trustworthy AI deployment is required.
MTQ 2: Demonstrated experience leading enterprise-wide technology and innovation initiatives within complex investigative, legal, regulatory, national security, or prosecutorial environments. Must possess the ability to align advanced AI capabilities with operational mission requirements, including lawful and effective support for investigations, litigation, intelligence, enforcement, or prosecutorial functions. Experience providing strategic leadership to multidisciplinary teams, coordinating across executive-level stakeholders, influencing organizational priorities, and representing organizational interests in interagency or government-wide technology initiatives is required.
MTQ 3: Experienced with a proven track record of leading multidisciplinary teams and driving enterprise-wide initiatives. Skilled in providing strategic direction, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and influencing organizational priorities to advance innovation and achieve mission-critical goals. Adept at managing complex projects and promoting responsible technology adoption at scale.
