Role Summary
We are looking for a talented individual to join our Law & Compliance Department as a paralegal. This position will collaborate with in-house counsel, business partners, and outside counsel on legal matters, projects, and critical Company initiatives. This includes subpoena response; liens, levies, and garnishments; legal and factual research; due diligence and data compilation; litigation and related discovery; and corporate and transactional matters. National Life Group is comprised of a family of affiliated financial services companies, including two insurance companies, a broker dealer, and an asset manager, among other entities. This role will work with all of these entities and business partners throughout the organization in an exciting, dynamic, and supportive environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review incoming subpoenas, collaborate with assigned attorney to identify and assemble responsive records, and prepare the Company’s response.
- Review incoming liens, levies, garnishments, and similar items related to Company employees and agents and ensure proper processing and response.
- Assist with litigation-related tasks as needed, including compiling records, preparing litigation hold memoranda and attorney engagement letters, assisting with responses to discovery requests, coordinating witness interviews and deposition prep, and other tasks.
- Assist with corporate governance tasks as needed, including corporate documentation, policies and procedures, corporate licenses and certificates of authority, regulatory filings, and other tasks.
- Assist with corporate transactions as needed, including due diligence, closing checklists, filings, and other transaction-related activities.
- Perform legal research, prepare memoranda summarizing findings, and provide general paralegal support for the Law & Compliance team.
- Assist with other Law & Compliance matters as needed.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent accreditation, experience, or training.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills (presentation, verbal, and written).
- Proven ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment – i.e., highly organized self- starter with ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines with little supervision.
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including senior leadership, as well as external clients, attorneys, and vendors.
- Demonstrated project management and collaboration capabilities, including driving successful outcomes and meeting deadlines on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Prior paralegal or law firm experience preferred but not required.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Currently licensed notary public or willing to obtain license.
The base compensation range represents the low and high end of the range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience. The range listed is just one component of our total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include an annual bonus, quarterly bonuses, commissions, and other long-term incentive compensation, depending on the position.
