
The Legal Counsel will have primary daily responsibility for supporting all aspects of Tate & Lyle’s North American employment matters, including investigating and supporting in the response to threatened disputes of all kinds and managing outside counsel. This key role will also involve overseeing contract negotiations for commercial and procurement business functions, and guiding business decisions to mitigate legal risks. The Legal Counsel will work cross-functionally within the Legal team and across the business to develop a deep knowledge of Tate & Lyle and our products and services and provide practical and strategic advice and guidance to business partners on a wide variety of legal issues that arise in the course of business at an established public listed company.
Accountabilities:
Employment
- Provide excellent, pragmatic and business-oriented legal advice in all areas of employment law, including the hire-to-retire lifecycle of an employee;
- Develop and implement best practices and policies to ensure compliance with applicable regulations at local, state, and federal levels;
- Define and regularly provide training to HR business partners on processes, regulatory updates, and best practices, in coordination with other team members across the North American region;
- Draft a variety of employment-related documents and templates, and provide guidance and review of HR-drafted policies;
- Monitor new legislation and changes to existing legislation that, in each case, have the potential to impact the Company’s business and staying apprised of the regulatory environment; and
- Manage employment-related litigation, arbitrations, and mediations, including preparing position statements, attending administrative hearings, tracking of matters, budget consultations and management of external counsel, as well as internal business partner management.
Commercial
- Provide technically correct but commercially focused advice to relevant business partners;
- Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements for distribution, commercial, and procurement, ensuring compliance with the Company’s policies and applicable laws and regulations as well;
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key business partners and ensure that their needs and commitments are correctly reflected in commercial documents;
- Support and guide the commercial and procurement functions on deal structure and contract negotiations; and
- Contribute to the development and implementation of legal best practices, including processes and template creation, within the commercial and procurement functions.
General
- Handle a high volume of legal work, balancing competing priorities and deadlines and keeping business partners informed about important developments;
- Work independently and as part of a collaborative team, managing multiple projects simultaneously and prioritizing effectively;
- Effectively communicate complex legal concepts and counsel to a diverse range of professionals;
- Develop strong relationships with wider Legal team and business partners to help manage legal risks across the North American region;
- Support cross-functional team requests as needed;
- Partner with and manage external counsel on specialized matters such as complex compliance issues and litigation as needed;
- Identify issues that may fall outside your expertise, driving resolution by partnering with other members of the Legal team and external counsel;
- Acquire knowledge and expertise to take on matters in other legal areas as needed;
- Assist with strategic projects as needed; and
- Adhere to safety policies, procedures and site rules by fully participating in the Company’s safety program, including reporting any incidents or near misses and auditing, and providing legal support to the EH&S function as needed.
Skills and Experience:
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school. Licensed to practice law in at least one state and in good standing with all state bars where admitted. If not admitted in Illinois, must successfully apply for in-house counsel licensure with the State Bar of Illinois.
- Must have the ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
- Commercial experience a plus, but employment experience is compulsory
- Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information and data requiring the highest degree of attention to preserve confidentiality;
- Good interpersonal skills, teamwork and collaboration abilities;
- Able to work in high-pressure situations;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Attention to detail; good organizational, communication skills;
- Proactive approach to work and willingness to learn and develop; and
- Ability to work well both independently (on a remote basis) and as part of a highly collaborative team.

When determining final compensation, we take into consideration: skillset, job scope, knowledge, prior experience, cost of living, market data, budget availability, and other factors as permitted by law.
The pay range for this position is: $160,000 - $193,000.
