Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives See More Job Openings by This EmployerThe incumbent serves as a Document Analyst - Firearm and Toolmark Examiner (NFEA Laboratory Coordinator) within the Office of Science and Technology, Forensic Services Division, Laboratory Services Branch, Forensic Crime Gun Intelligence Laboratory in Wichita, KS. The laboratories provide highly technical and scientific services in support of the Bureau's primary law enforcement missions.
Duties
- Functions as a leading technical expert in firearm and toolmark examination as National Firearms Examiner Academy (NFEA) Laboratory Coordinator, providing expert advice and assistance to ATF officials, other federal agencies, state and local government organizations, private laboratories, and industry.
- Performs firearm and toolmark examinations and comparisons of the highest complexity, analyzing microscopic surface contours to determine if two items share a common origin and authoring laboratory reports documenting results and conclusions.
- Advises attorneys on the evidentiary value or significance of the results of examinations and the appropriate approach to use in presenting scientific testimony, and maintains expert knowledge in court decisions regarding admissibility and reliability of the discipline.
- Provides training and guidance to students and evaluates their work product.
- Designs training curriculum and prepares/finalizes lesson plans.
- $125,776 - $163,514/year
Key Requirements:
- Must be U.S. Citizen or National
- Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.
- May be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
- Must be a current permanent Department of Justice employee with competitive status or a CTAP/RPL eligible candidate.
- Pass drug screening and subject to random drug test.
- Suitable for Federal employment determined by background investigation.
- Must meet all applicable time-in-grade requirements by the closing of this announcement.
Basic Requirements
Degree: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study - physical and biological sciences, graphic arts, police science, criminology, or law.
OR
To qualify for this position at the GS-14 grade level, candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-13) by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in the resume.
Specialized experience must include all of:
- Performing firearm and toolmark examinations and comparisons of the highest complexity without technical guidance; AND
- Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, key concepts of forensic firearm and toolmark examinations and comparisons as well as analytical results and conclusions; AND
- Instructing and evaluating students or trainees in technical forensic duties related to firearm and toolmark analysis; AND
- Establishing and maintaining internal and external work relationships with management, coworkers, peer groups, customers, and other organizations or agencies; AND
- Analyzing issues, overcoming obstacles, fostering teamwork, and coordinating the work of several organizational segments or projects.

- A copy of your most recent performance appraisal and SF-50 "Notification of Personnel Action" noting current position, grade/band level, promotion potential, and duty location.
- Your transcript must come from a nationally accredited educational institution recognized by the Department of Education.
- If submitting a foreign transcript, you must have the transcript reviewed by an approved foreign education review organization recognized by the Department of Education.
