Job Opportunity: Paralegal

The City of Nacogdoches is seeking a professional, highly motivated Paralegal to join our Legal Department. Under general supervision, this role executes a wide range of administrative, court and legal duties supporting the City Attorney. Responsibilities include preparing and drafting legal correspondence, conducting legal research, maintaining litigation calendars, managing court filings and coordinating records retention. The ideal candidate demonstrates discretion, independent judgement and a high level of organization in serving internal municipal operations and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

Serves as a primary point of contact for the Legal Department, providing information and assistance to internal staff, business associates and the public by phone, email and in person.

Reviews, edits, proofreads and drafts legal correspondence, court pleadings, ordinances and official documents.

Prepares filings and pleadings for Municipal Court and other legal proceedings, conducting legal research and document reviews as needed.

Tracks and maintains the department litigation calendar, ensuring all court deadlines, appointments, meetings and depositions are managed effectively.

Coordinates structured physical and electronic case indexing, serving as the department's records retention coordinator using Laserfische.

Assists with Legal Department budget monitoring, invoice processing, office supply management and timekeeping for payroll.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; a college degree is preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in standard office software (Word, Excel, Google Workspace) and legal/document management tools. Strong editing, proofreading and organizational skills.
  • Must be bondable, possess a valid Texas driver's license and obtain a Notary Public License within 6 months of hire.
