Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.

Summary Statement

The Delaware Department of Justice is seeking a highly skilled professional to serve as Chief Investigator/State Detective, leading the Extraditions Unit within the Administrative Division in New Castle County. This position is responsible for overseeing all extradition functions of the Department.

Essential Functions

This integral position supervises five (5) State Detectives and one (1) Administrative Specialist.  This position handles all the assignments of extraditions, personnel administration; the coordination of travel in addition to the responsibility of processing documentation required for the extraditions.  The Chief State Detective answers questions daily and is required to handle any problems associated between State Detectives and fugitives or prisoners.  The Chief State Detective is responsible for monitoring the progress of extraditions conducted by the State Detectives via reports involving statistics.  This supervisor will maintain professional liaisons and strong lines of communications not only with the executive management of the Delaware Department of Justice but also with all federal and state regulatory, administrative, legal agencies and police agencies, U.S. Marshalls and Sherriff’s offices involved in all extraditions.  Duties include managing the condition of automobiles to ensure they are in excellent operating order, and keeping current with necessary equipment needed by the State Detectives such as tasers, bullet proof vests, etc.  This supervisor monitors the daily activities and schedules for the State Detectives in addition to securing all necessary warrants, indictments and information throughout Delaware to enforce Governor’s warrants.  This supervisor keeps track of all state laws as to what needs to be furnished in all states as each state is different.

Job Requirements
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Minimum of five years law enforcement experience, or the functional equivalent, with a background in criminal investigation.
  2. Prior experience in managing law enforcement officers and/or DOJ investigators tasked with investigating complex criminal cases and/or complex civil matters.
  3. Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Power Point, DELJIS, NCIC, and LEISS.
  4. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats
  5. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  6. Ability to qualify and carry a weapon.
  7. Must possess a current (valid and active) Police Officers Standards Training (“POST”) certification (formerly known as Council on Police Training [“COPT”] certificate).

  • This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16.  This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
