Coverage Attorney

Job Summary:  The Coverage Attorney position serves as an advisor to the Claims Department, providing guidance, mentoring and counseling on policy and coverage interpretation.   

Major Accountabilities:

  1. Provide the primary legal expertise on coverage related matters and coverage opinions to the Claims organization.
  2. Responsible for completion of necessary legal research; thereafter providing legal direction on any matters relevant to coverage associated with good faith claims handling.
  3. Attend trials, mediations, arbitrations, court conferences, depositions, and other meetings with outside counsel as directed.
  4. Handle all assigned files in a timely and efficient manner with a clear plan of action in place for each.
  5. Responsible for utilizing outside counsel in assuring the appropriate handling of complex declaratory judgements actions brought by or against Canal, as well as determining post-verdict decision and handling of appeals.
  6. Provide training on legal related matters to the organization, as directed.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications:

Education/Training Requirements:  Juris Doctorate with advanced knowledge of insurance law required.  Must be admitted to practice law in at least one state.

Experience/Specialized Skills:  Minimum of two years’ experience in either a law firm or in-house position dealing with coverage matters, ideally in commercial auto and construction defect segments of the insurance industry. Must possess advanced knowledge of legal principles, terminology, and practices as they relate to insurance operations.  Advanced computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet, and e-mail) required. 

Special Considerations:

Physical Requirements:  Constant use of vision, hearing, and communication (oral and written in person and via telephone).  Frequent standing, walking, handling, reaching, grasping, and periods of prolonged concentration.  Heavy use of computer and office equipment. Occasional bending, kneeling and lifting (up to 25 lbs.)

Travel/Hours of Service:  Occasional travel and periodic work outside of standard business hours or on weekends may be required.

Location:  Job is located in Greenville, South Carolina.  Following training, a hybrid work schedule of at least three days in office and two days out of office is offered.
