THIS POSITION IS BEING RECRUITED AS A COUNTY-WIDE SECONDARY WORK ASSIGNMENT OPPORTUNITY. ONLY CURRENT EMPLOYEES OF FREDERICK COUNTY GOVERNMENT ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.
Non-exempt; sporadic part-time work based on program needs; no-benefitsThis position supports the Youthful Offender Program (YOP), a juvenile diversion initiative led by the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office. YOP offers at-risk youth an alternative to traditional justice system involvement through a structured, three-week experience that includes classroom instruction, counseling, site visits, and community service. In this role, the Van Driver ensures safe and timely transportation of participants to and from school, home, and scheduled program activities. Responsibilities include assisting with boarding, monitoring behavior during transit, and maintaining compliance with traffic laws and County procedures. Supervision is received from Diversion Program Manager.

- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive a Frederick County van along assigned routes, adhering to scheduled pick-up and drop-off times for student passengers
- Transport students to various field trip destinations, planning routes and stops as needed to ensure timely and safe travel
- Maintain order and enforce discipline among student passengers in accordance with program policies
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
- Identify and report mechanical issues or needed repairs to supervisor
- Refuel the van as required and ensure it is maintained in a clean and safe operating condition
- Complete required documentation, including mileage logs, passenger counts, and other operational reports
- Participate in scheduled meetings and training sessions related to safety, first aid, and operational updates
- Perform other duties as assigned

- QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- High school graduation or the equivalency
- Possession of a valid automobile operators operator's license
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:- Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
- Ability to satisfy all Department of Transportation requirements as they apply to periodic physical examinations and licensing standards
- Ability and willingness to learn First Aid, CPR and other job-related skills, and to maintain current certifications
- Knowledge of Maryland state and local traffic laws and regulations
- Knowledge of roads and communities in the Frederick County area, and able to read maps and follow directions
- Accurate math and clerical skills, with the ability to properly complete mileage and vehicle use reports and other departmental record-keeping
- Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills, including the ability to effectively use telephone and utilize two-way radio communications in compliance with FCC regulations, and the ability to accurately follow written and spoken instructions and effectively convey information to passengers
- Discretion and good judgment in dealing with sensitive and personal information with ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality
- Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills including the ability to clearly explain policies and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, representatives of cooperating agencies and the general public
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:- Driving experience transporting passengers
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS- While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently drive

- Available for varied evening and weekend work hours for meetings and transportation needs
- Ability to provide own transportation to meetings, etc.
- This position is subject to random drug testing, to include testing for marijuana
