Associate Attorney - Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith

Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith Attorney (Associate and Senior Attorney) Location: Kansas City, MO
Base salary: Associate $120,000 to $140,000 | Senior Attorney $150,000 to $200,000, plus bonus Our client is an established civil litigation defense and trial firm with about 100 attorneys across the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Its Kansas City insurance coverage group represents insurers in coverage disputes and bad faith litigation across Missouri and Kansas, where this work is especially active. The group is led by an equity partner whose practice has outgrown the current team. The firm is hiring at two levels: an associate with 3+ years of litigation experience and a senior attorney with 8+ years in coverage and bad faith work. Both seats support an existing, growing practice, so no book of business is required. You will analyze policies, write coverage opinions and litigate declaratory judgment and extra-contractual cases from filing through trial.

• Review insurance policies and draft coverage opinions and reservation of rights letters
• Litigate coverage and bad faith matters in state and federal court
• Take and defend depositions and prepare witnesses
• Draft pleadings, dispositive motions and briefs, and argue motions
• Prepare for trial, including direct and cross examination
• Advise claims professionals on exposure and strategy

• JD with active Missouri and Kansas licenses (tell us if Kansas is in process)
• Associate: 3+ years of litigation with an insurance defense or personal injury background, strong writing and a real interest in coverage work
• Senior Attorney: 8+ years with substantial insurer-side coverage and bad faith litigation, ready to run complex files independently from day one
• Hands-on deposition, motion and hearing experience
• Excellent legal analysis and writing

Base salary by level as listed above, plus a bonus for hours above an 1,800 billable target. Primarily in-office, with added flexibility for senior attorneys. Medical, dental, vision, basic and voluntary life insurance, long-term disability and 401(k) with match.
