Settlement Clerk (In Office)
Previous settlement experience in a law firm is required

The Settlement Clerk is responsible for managing the processing of case settlements between the accounting department and the legal settlement department from receipt of funds through final disbursement. This role ensures accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in financial transactions, lien resolution, and client payments. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and experienced in handling legal financial workflows.
Settlement Processing
- Coordinate with Settlement Manager regarding receipt of settlement funds (checks, wires, ACH)
- Work with settlement and accounting departments to determine the accuracy of case expenses and payee information.
- Create a tracking system and coordinate attorney approval of all disbursements
- Ensure all case expenses and settlement amounts are recorded at the case level in Litify
Disbursements & Payments
- Ensure all disbursements align with settlement agreements and firm policies
- Mail out all settlement payments to clients, medical providers, lienholders, and third parties
- Track and confirm delivery of funds
- Once all settlement tasks are complete, ensure cases are closed in Litify and Sage Intacct
Documentation & Recordkeeping
- Maintain complete and organized records
- Upload and track all settlement-related documents in the firm’s case management system
- Ensure proper documentation for audits and compliance
- Maintain detailed records of all disbursements and ensure they are properly documented in the firm’s database
Client & Vendor Communication
- Coordinate with the settlement regarding settlement status and disbursements
- Respond to internal team inquiries regarding settlement progress
Quality Control & Compliance
- Verify the accuracy of all settlement memos and settlement check/disbursements
- Ensure adherence to firm policies, legal requirements, and ethical standards
- Identify and escalate discrepancies or issues
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
- 1–3+ years of experience in a law firm, preferably in settlement, accounting, or personal injury
- Precious experience with reviewing expenses and settlement distributions is required.
- A strong understanding of legal settlement processes and trust accounting is required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and case management software
- Experience with legal accounting systems is a plus
