Summary
Under the direction of the Firm attorneys, the paralegal position researches law, investigates facts, and prepares documents to assist the Firm attorneys by performing various support duties. Paralegals are encouraged to reach a billable goal of 1200 hours each fiscal year and 720 law firm hours. Paralegals are supervised by the Office Manager.
Responsibilities
- Assists lawyers in preparing for depositions, hearings, conferences, presentations, transactional closings, and trials. Indexes student records. Prepares exhibits, charts, and diagrams to display information. May be present during client interviews and witnesses.
- Researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes.
- Prepares, drafts, and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, public records, contracts, motions, affidavits, and subpoenas; transactional documents, such as real estate leases; and closing documents.
- Investigates facts and law of case to determine causes of action and to prepare case accordingly.
- Organizes and tracks files for important transactions or case documents, including pleadings and voluminous exhibits, documents, and student records; creates and maintains a case-management database.
- Performs other clerical duties such as scheduling appointments, providing information to callers, taking dictation, composing and typing routine correspondence, and reading and routing incoming mail.
- Conducts routine discovery.

Requirements

- Certificate of completion or degree from an ABA-approved paralegal program or post-secondary institution.
- Proficient in English grammar usage, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and legal terminology.
- Proficient in skillfully operating computer software applications, including office equipment (e.g., copiers, fax machines, overhead projectors, personal computers, etc.) and relevant software (e.g., DMS, Microsoft Office, Macros, Coyote, Juralaw, Logikcull, Case lines, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with superior attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to organize and express ideas clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to use diplomacy and discretion when appropriate, analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with a results orientation.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and with clients.
