Job Description

Required License: Law license; May Require: DOD "Secret" clearance

Job Summary:

Provide legal counsel, preventative legal guidance and advice, and services to the University in its information documentation, privacy and security practices as well as assist in the University's contracting processes.

Essential Functions:

Assist in developing the University's response to new federal legislation in achieving compliance with its long-standing privacy policies and procedures.

For records compliance, be responsible for responding to subpoenas and public record requests received by the University.  This will include accepting requests, identifying responsive records on campus, and preparing responses to the requests; as well as ensuring compliance with state and federal laws regarding records. 

Consult with the University records officer on the University Records Retention Manual and create policies for records retention.

Report to the VP and General Counsel and provide advice and counsel with respect to: records compliance as necessary, records archive matters or other such matters as directed by the VP and General Counsel.

Oversee all electronic records retention and destruction pursuant to the University's Electronic Records Retention Policy.

Negotiate, draft, review, edit and approve University contracts and agreements.  Assist with the operation of contract administration and procedures.

Additional Position Information:

Education:

Requires a Law Degree.

Licenses/Certifications/Requirements:

License to practice law in the state of Ohio.

Experience:

Requires 2 – 4 years experience of professional legal work.  Strong communication, analytical and research skills required. Ability to organize time and tasks to effectively manage a heavy workload, flexibility and a collegial disposition are required.  Ability to conduct legal research, communication and perform related tasks via computer and technology required.  Ability to practice law by the Supreme Court of Ohio required.  Previous work in public higher education or other relevant public employment is preferred.

Compensation:  The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience.
