About the job:
We are looking for a Corporate Counsel who views the law as a tool for innovation and a better customer experience. Along with identifying risks, you will be a strategic advisor providing high-quality legal and business solutions that empower our teams and protect our mission.
In this role, you serve as a general in-house attorney for the organization. You will interpret Montana law to provide strategic recommendations, serving as a versatile legal expert across a wide variety of subject areas that keep Montana State Fund moving forward.
What You Will Do:
- Advise business on legal interpretation and strategic objectives: You’ll provide legal and business advice to internal stakeholders regarding various insurance matters, including regulation, contract interpretation, coverage issues and insurance policy administration. You will also interpret statutes, court decisions, rules and policies concerning or affecting MSF by providing written and oral legal advice and recommendations. That advice may also include recommendations concerning the development of insurance rates, form updates, and process improvements. You also will have the opportunity to support MSF’s legislative and regulatory compliance work.
- Perform corporate counsel functions: You will manage non-workers’ compensation litigation by overseeing outside counsel and their litigation activities. Your general duties also will support MSF’s business needs with respect to procurement/contracts, employment law, policyholder bankruptcies, and other miscellaneous corporate counsel duties. A successful candidate will maintain general knowledge of state and federal employment laws impacting MSF.
- Lead and support special projects and training: You will develop and provide training to internal stakeholders on insurance and other subject areas, lead special projects and project teams, and consult on projects across the organization. You also will answer various insurance-related questions posed by internal stakeholders on a daily basis. A successful candidate will have a strong customer experience mindset and will be able to maintain a positive working relationship with coworkers, clients and members of the public.
What You Bring to the Team:
- You excel at translating complex statutes and court decisions into clear, empathetic, and actionable advice that resonates with internal stakeholders.
- You bring a strong background as an attorney in Montana, with the work ethic and agility to master the nuances of Montana insurance law.
- You are comfortable pivoting between diverse legal areas from policyholder bankruptcies to employment law and representing the organization with confidence.
- You enjoy leading project teams and mentoring others to foster a deeper understanding of legal standards within the company.
What you will need (minimum qualifications):
- A Juris Doctor Degree (JD)
- A license to practice law in the State of Montana
- A strong interest in learning more about Montana’s workers’ compensation laws and other applicable insurance laws.
