Controller

Vale Group has partnered with a legal services firm in the Portland, OR area that is seeking a Controller to join their team. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls, with leadership experience overseeing multi-functional accounting teams. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role will lead the firm’s financial strategy, manage key relationships with banking and tax partners, and drive the finance function. Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of eight (8) across accounting, payroll, and finance operations
• Manage month-end close process, financial reporting, and analysis under a modified cash basis
• Oversee tax return preparation and coordinate with external auditors and consultants
• Build and maintain strong internal controls and ensure regulatory compliance
• Support and enhance treasury functions, including banking partnerships and cash flow optimization
• Deliver strategic financial insights to guide pricing, revenue strategy, and risk management
• Drive continuous process improvement initiatives across financial operations, integrating AI tools where applicable
• Collaborate with firm leadership to align financial goals with business strategy
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred
• CPA designation strongly preferred
• Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial leadership
• Prior experience in professional services or law firm environments preferred
• Expertise in GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and cash flow management
• Demonstrated leadership in managing accounting and payroll teams
• High technical proficiency in Excel
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
