Job Description

We are looking for a Copyright Counsel to join Roblox’s Legal and Advocacy team. Reporting to the Senior IP Counsel, you will work on a broad array of intermediary liability issues with a focus on copyright, Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) compliance, trademark, and our IP reporting program. This role will involve forming strategic and practical legal guidance, advising on product and policy matters, and collaborating across the organization. We are looking for someone who is familiar with intermediary liability, excited to work collaboratively with both operations and product teams, and eager to dive into complex and interesting issues related to user-generated content (UGC). This is a full-time, hybrid position based in our San Mateo Headquarters.

You Will:

  • Provide subject-matter expertise and guidance to operational, product, and business teams on copyright and trademark law, the DMCA, EU Copyright Directive, and related intermediary liability issues.
  • Manage and improve Roblox’s IP reporting program, including developing internal workflows and policies.
  • Advise on complex IP takedown reports that require legal review.
  • Evaluate intermediary liability implications of new products and features.
  • Counsel on matters relating to UGC, including fair use, licensing, and content moderation.
  • Remain up-to-date on relevant laws, regulations, and evolving industry standards to provide sound legal advice.
  • Tackle any additional incoming questions to the legal team that you are interested in!

You Have:

  • 3-5+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably a combination of law firm and in-house experience at a consumer-facing technology company.
  • Working knowledge of the DMCA, U.S. copyright and trademark principles such as fair use, the E-Commerce Directive, and the EU Copyright Directive.
  • Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Experience counseling e-commerce or social media platforms with a focus on content moderation, online safety, and intermediary liability issues.
  • Prior experience advising on trademark legal issues with UGC is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with product policy or trust and safety organizations to develop internal and external policies.
  • A track record of educating internal stakeholders, translating complex concepts, and advising on risk mitigation strategies.
  • Strong business-oriented judgment and the ability to analyze problems, propose solutions, and provide advice that is creative, practical, and legally sound, taking into account the needs and objectives of the business.
  • Ability to work well with a small but growing team and desire to seek responsibility and work autonomously. Must be able to manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues, particularly in a fast-paced corporate setting.
  • Sense of humor and high level of professionalism.
