Paralegal - Criminal

Expected salary range is $26.23 to $35.02.  Full salary range is $26.23 to $43.81

Bachelor's degree from and accredited college or university in legal studies or related field.
OR
Associate's degree from an accredited college in legal studies or related field and two (2) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to four (4) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
 
Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.

Under supervision, independently prepares complaints and pleadings for filing with District Court on behalf of the County Attorney's Office. This requires review of investigative reports from law enforcement, review of Minnesota statutes and case law. At the direction of attorneys, requests discovery, evidence and prepares disclosure accordingly with Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

• Reviews reports from law enforcement agencies, reviews Minnesota statutes and case law, and independently prepares documents for attorney review
• Prepares all pleadings, motions and correspondence for e-filing with District Court
• Requests evidence from law enforcement agencies
• Disclose proper case information to defense counsel, noting all confidential/non discoverable items
• Creates and maintains criminal case files
• Interprets and explains policies, regulations, statutes, and operating procedures to employees, other county staff, city staff and the public
• Coordinates work with other staff
• Performs other general support duties as required

• Knowledge of criminal law and procedure, understanding of court process, sentencing procedures and guidelines
• Knowledge of other legal matters within the responsibility of the Office of the County Attorney
• Knowledge of and ability to perform legal research
• Skill in the use of computers and technology
• Ability to function independently in preparation of legal matters
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, law enforcement officers, victims of criminal acts, witnesses in cases, professional and paraprofessional staff of other agencies
