POPULATION SERVED
The position does not involve direct patient care for a population of patients ages 18 and older. Age specific experience and/or special training and/or expertise are not required to serve this population.
POSITION SUMMARY
Paralegal provides high-level support by maintaining and drafting documents, organizing files, and assisting in the preparation of legal matters. They also conduct research, prepare statistical reports, handle confidential information, and perform clerical functions such as preparing correspondence, arranging conference calls, and scheduling meetings.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Have a familiarity with California statutes, codes, court processes and rules of court, and principles of civil, criminal, constitutional, and administrative law
- Possess extensive knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and materials of legal research and analysis
- A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association; OR
- A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education;
- A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject, a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California, or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state, for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks; OR
- A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma, a minimum of three years of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California, or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state, for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks
- Legal research techniques and standard legal reference materials
- Legal office terminology, processes, procedures, and the format for legal documents
- Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary
- Business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals
- Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing, business letter writing and the operation of common office equipment
- Perform basic legal research from varied sources
- Interview individuals of various socioeconomic backgrounds in difficult situations
- Prepare a variety of legal documents
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Setting appointments, arranging meetings, and maintaining calendars
- Preparing correspondence and documents
- Filing, typing, and using computer software with emphasis on basic word processing and spreadsheet

- Read and analyze incoming memos, submissions, and reports to determine their significance and plan response
- File and retrieve corporate documents, records, and reports
- Compile data, and prepare papers for consideration and presentation by executives, committees and boards of directors
- Conduct interviews with employees and management
- Summarize depositions, testimony and interrogations
- Attend relevant meetings and events
- Draft legal documents such as contracts
