Legal Counsel - Fatherhood Program

Position Summary:

Responsible for legal consultation, recommendations and advocacy within one or more program settings. Works to ensure clients have the ability to improve their functioning through legal counsel and representation as well as advising staff to assist clients with legal matters.  

Job Responsibilities:

• Advocates for clients to improve their functioning by preparing, reviewing and submitting legal 
• documents and representation in court
• Assists program staff in filing motions and advocating for clients in court
• Conducts legal assessments and research and acts as primary interface for external legal proceedings and negotiations
• Remain up to date on relevant legal/regulatory issues, rule changes, federal, state and other laws
• Documents all services in a timely manner that supports client engagement
• Provides problem solving and conflict management assistance to clients 
• Collaborates with program staff and other professionals to tailor services to client needs
• Provides staff training as needed
• Inform leadership and consult with staff to minimize risk to clients and program
• Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including legal research and writing
• Strong knowledge of applicable Federal, State and other laws and regulations specifically in the areas of child custody and support and other family law matters
• Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals
• Ability to be adaptive, flexible and responsive to the needs of the program and agency
• Ability to recognize issues, define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to manage time effectively and efficiently
• Ability to work with wide variety of individuals in an ethical and culturally sensitive manner
• Travel locally in personal vehicle

Job Requirements:

• Juris Doctorate Degree and admitted to law in the State of Ohio and;
• 2 years in practice as in-house or in law firm setting
• Valid driver license and auto insurance

Essential Functions/Physical Demands:

• Positional:  Driveing in accordance with job duties assigned. Frequent to occasional standing and walking.  Frequent sitting
• Gross Mobility: Rare lifting, climbing, or crawling. Infrequent balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Occasional reaching, bending and handling

• Sensory: Rare tasting/smelling. Infrequent use of color vision. Occasional use of far visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision. Frequent use of near and midrange visual acuity, and visual accommodation. Frequent to constant hearing and talking.
