Summary

Explore an exciting opportunity with the City of Medford! We are actively recruiting for a Senior Assistant City Attorney with criminal law experience or a notable interest in criminal prosecution. 

This position is open until filled with a first review date scheduled for Monday, October 28th

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Juris Doctorate or Doctor of Jurisprudence; and
  • Two (2) years in the practice of law. 

Special Qualifications:
  • Ability to obtain Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) certification within six months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) upon hire.
  • Knowledge of judicial procedures, rules of evidence, methods of legal research; interpreting and applying legal principles, etc.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, statutes and case law within assigned areas; criminal procedures; victim/witness rights; legal research methods and constitutional law.

  • Requires possession of a valid driver’s license by date of hire.

  • Must maintain acceptable driving record.
  • Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.

Desired Attributes:  
Experience with criminal prosecution or criminal defense.

Available Schedules: 
  • 8 hours daily, Monday - Friday 
  • Opportunity for alternate schedule:
    • 9-80 (nine-hour workdays with a three-day weekend every other week)
    • 4-10 (four 10-hour days with three days off each week)
    • Telework

       



Directly related experience and qualifications will be evaluated alongside others who perform work of comparable character as required by Pay Equity Law. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Examples of Job Duties

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Advises City departments on policies, issues, legality of decisions, and other related activities.
  • Provides legal staffing for various City boards, commissions, and committees.
  • Prosecutes municipal court cases, such as:
    • Arguing and preparing motions.
    • Preparing subpoenas, preparing witnesses for testimony, negotiating pleas.
    • Reviewing letters to judge regarding disposition of cases.
    • Determining whether to prosecute or dismiss cases.
  • The scope of assigned areas of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the City Attorney and City Manager.

  • Evaluates financial claims against the City and litigates civil cases involving the City.
  • Reviews and drafts public contracts.
  • Performs other projects and duties as assigned.

Work Environment & Physical Demands: 
This position requires inside, office desk work that includes exposure to regular office noise and distractions, adequate lighting, and regulated HVAC systems in relation to temperature. This environment may also include interactions with the public including angry/hostile individuals.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the essential job functions satisfactorily. This position involves extended periods of sitting and standing, with occasional walking, crouching, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, and balancing. The employee is regularly required to operate a variety of automated office machines which include a computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, telephone, etc.
