(Bilingual)


ACCESS Legal Self-Help Center

(Class Code 420C)



Eligible San Francisco Superior Court Employees Only


The Deputy Court Clerk II position is only open to current employees of the San Francisco Superior Court who (1) are under a permanent appointment with the Court, or (2) previously held a permanent appointment and accepted a temporary appointment without a break in service. Individuals who are not current employees of the Court, or current temporary Court employees who did not previously hold a permanent appointment with the Court without a break in service may not apply. 


The San Francisco Superior Court is seeking qualified individuals interested in serving as a full-time bilingual Deputy Court Clerk II in the ACCESS Legal Self-Help Center. This position performs a wide variety of general clerical support work for the Court, including legal document processing, public counter work, live helpline, data entry, other Court specific functions, and other job-related duties as required. This position requires the regular and routine ability to communicate verbally and/or in writing with limited English proficient speaking court customers. Therefore, the position requires bilingual skills preferably in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic, and/or Russian.


At the ACCESS Legal Self-Help Center, you will work with a dynamic team dedicated to fostering teamwork and providing efficient and meaningful services to self-represented litigants as they navigate the judicial system. The Deputy Court Clerk II position provides a unique opportunity to further develop professional skills such as customer service, interpersonal/communication, and problem-solving, while gaining exposure to and training in various areas of law.


This selection process is being conducted in accordance with San Francisco Superior Court Personnel Rule 4. An eligibility list will not be established.

COMPENSATION:          $2,425.93 to $3,412.96 biweekly ($63,074 to $88,737 annually)*



*Plus Bilingual Pay: $60 biweekly for 40+ hours of use of bilingual skills biweekly, $40 biweekly for less than 40 hours of use of bilingual skills biweekly

Examples of Duties

POSITION OVERVIEW


  • Performs a wide variety of Court support work requiring substantial knowledge and understanding of Court functions, policies, and procedures.
  • Reviews documents, researches discrepancies, and verifies information.
  • Schedules Court dates and records dispositions.
  • Responds to and resolves difficult customer service questions and problems.
  • Provides information to ACCESS Center attorneys, paralegals, volunteers, litigants, and the public.
  • Regularly serves as a liaison with other Court departments, agencies, and concerned parties.
  • Enters and retrieves data from computer systems, reviewing data and making corrections.
  • Prepares, coordinates, develops, and maintains calendars.
  • Accepts legal documents, reviewing them for correct form and timeliness of filing.
  • Annotates case files and status records to reflect proper receipt of documents and compliance with required actions.
  • Establishes, maintains, and closes case files or legal records.
  • Compiles workload and status information and statistical data.
  • Maintains and updates files and databases; generates computer reports.
  • Sorts and files legal materials; locates and pulls court files; searches files and verifies the accuracy and correct placement of documents.
  • Opens, time stamps, sorts, and distributes incoming documents and mail according to routing procedures and time constraints.
  • Assists self-represented litigants with a variety of documents such as restraining orders, small claims, name/gender changes, and other family law matters.
  • Provides self-represented litigants with legal information and referral via live helpline or in-person.
  • Provides one-on-one direct services including forms completion and instructions for filing, service of process, and next steps in an action.
  • Conducts thorough case searches for family law and civil cases, including POP database.
  • Maintains office supplies and equipment. 
  • Maintains updated Judicial Council Forms, self-help packets, ACCESS Center brochures and materials.
  • Participates in orientation and training of volunteers and new ACCESS staff.
  • Provides back-up to Family Law Examiner related to processing domestic violence restraining orders prior to and after judicial review and signature. 
  • Operates a variety of office machines and equipment.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.


Work is performed in an office and courtroom environment; continuous contact with judicial officers, attorneys, litigants, other staff, and the general public.


Typical Physical Requirements: Sit for extended periods; frequently stand for extended periods, and frequently walk, bend, stoop, lift, and stretch; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.

Qualifications


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:


Two years of experience performing a variety of office support work.



DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge of:

  • California statutes related to court procedures, including the Code of Civil Procedure, Penal Code, Vehicle Code, Probate Code, Family Code, Small Claims Act, Welfare and Institution Code, Rules of Court and related statutes.
  • Public and community relations.
  • Legal terminology, procedures and documents used in court cases and their statutory filing requirements.
  • Preparation and maintenance of court calendars.
  • Establishment and maintenance of filing and information retrieval systems.
  • Personal computers and software applications related to court support work. 
  • Proper English grammar, spelling and usage.


Ability to:

  • Research, understand, interpret, explain, and utilize California statutes related to court procedures.
  • Perform court support work involving judgment and accuracy.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate records and reports.
  • Type or use a keyboard at a rate of 35 words per minute and prepare materials with reasonable accuracy.
  • Review legal documents for correctness of form, completeness of information, and conformance with established requirements.
  • Explain laws, regulations, and procedures regarding completion and filing of legal documents.
  • Use a personal computer and appropriate software for word processing, record keeping, and court support functions.
  • Use a headset and microphone to answer live helpline.
  • Operate standard office machines and equipment.
  • Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
  • Effectively represent the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, in contacts with the public and representatives of other government agencies.
  • Maintain confidential information when required by legal or ethical standards.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective business working relationships with others.

SELECTION PROCESS


Initial Screening:

The Court will further evaluate these documents and may interview only those applicants it deems may best meet the needs of the Court. Not all applicants will receive an interview.


Oral Interview:

If necessary, selected applicants may be interviewed to determine their relative knowledge, abilities, and skill levels in job-related areas. If interviews are scheduled, it is anticipated that they will be conducted in July 2025.
