Location: Oklahoma City, OK
The Oklahoma Office of the Attorney General is currently seeking a full-time Legal Assistant in our Criminal Appeals Unit.
Position Summary:
The Criminal Appeals Unit (“Unit”) represents the state in the criminal appeals process to ensure that the lawful decisions rendered by judges and juries are upheld in the appellate courts. The Unit’s Legal Assistants play a pivotal role in the smooth and successful operation of the Unit. The Unit maintains a demanding workflow, so the successful candidate must have a positive attitude, a flexible personality, and interpersonal and emotional sensitivity. Furthermore, because the successful candidate will work as part of a team of legal assistants, the successful candidate must be a team player. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Essential Functions:
- Provide legal assistance to multiple attorneys
- Prepare pleadings, briefs, exhibits, correspondence, discovery, and court filings, and complete electronic filing
- Assist in maintaining electronic and physical files
- Docketing
- Data entry
- Scanning, printing, and binding
- Obtain court documents as requested by attorneys
- Conduct legal research
- Miscellaneous administrative tasks, such as sorting mail, preparing meeting calendar invites, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Applicant must be detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills; excellent spelling and grammar skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and WordPerfect.
- Must have the ability to prepare a variety of complex pleadings and correspondence, including Table of Authorities and Indexing, as well as the ability to prioritize workflow, manage sometimes competing deadlines, and address new priorities as they arise.
- Must interact respectfully and productively with all Unit staff, including regular contact with and reporting to the Deputy Attorney General of Criminal Appeals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- In addition to ECF experience, knowledge of 10th Circuit and United States Supreme Court filing procedures preferred.
