Job Description

Job Summary:

The Paralegal will provide legal assistance and administrative support to the Canaveral Port Authority’s (“CPA”) in-house legal department.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent organizational and interpersonal skills along with the ability to perform specialized, complex and confidential administrative support duties.   The position requires the candidate demonstrate a high degree of attention to detail and flexibility to successfully manage time-sensitive priorities.

Essential Functions:

General:

  • Possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to perform a variety of complex tasks requiring independent judgment/action

  • Maintain utmost confidentiality on litigation and other sensitive matters
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the CEO, General Counsel or his/her designee

 

 General Counsel Support:

  • Draft, edit, and proofread complex contract documents such as commercial leases and agreements
  • Research, analyze, compile, and summarize information on laws, statutes, opinions, financial records, administrative orders, and case law
  • Prepare written reports and internal memoranda
  • Draft, update, and amend internal policies and procedures
  • Manage, organize, track and maintain contract and litigation files and deadlines
  • Assist in case preparation and case management for civil litigation
  • Assist in drafting, editing, and maintaining transactional and litigation documents (e.g., motions, pleadings)
  • Assist in discovery responses
  • Assist in public record request responses
  • Archive and digitize files in accordance with document retention policy
  • Coordinate meetings, maintain calendars and track critical dates and deadlines
  • Data entry to include updating and maintaining electronic records and file keeping
  • Review legal documents for accuracy and completeness of information prior to dissemination
  • During emergency conditions, all CPA employees are automatically considered essential employees and may be subject to recall.  These events may include, but are not limited to, natural, man-made, or public health emergencies. Employees may be expected to perform emergency and/or recovery operations outside of their normal assigned responsibilities and routine working hours.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Associate’s degree, paralegal certification, or equivalent professional experience. 
  • Preference given to Florida Registered Paralegal
  • 5 years of legal and executive assistant experience supporting either an attorney or senior management
  • Experience working with a governing board of directors or commissioners (e.g., corporate, county, municipal, or special district) preferred
  • Experience and understanding of commercial real estate transactions, due diligence, documentation (e.g., surveys, legal descriptions), and contracts
  • Familiarity with county Clerk’s Office processes and procedures preferred
  • Familiarity with Westlaw preferred
  • Familiarity with Florida’s e-Filing portal preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook

 

Licenses / Certification Required:

  • Possess a valid Florida Driver’s License or has the ability to obtain one within 30 days
  • Possess a Florida notary public certification or has the ability to obtain one within 30 days

  

Physical Requirement:

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work 
  • May involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (20-30 pounds)

  • Office Environment
