Job Description

Description

Looking for a courtroom-focused litigation position where you can make an immediate impact?

The City and Borough of Juneau Law Department is seeking an attorney to join its criminal prosecution team.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Assistant Attorney I/II is primarily dedicated to criminal prosecution, handling misdemeanor offenses including driving under the influence, larceny, assault, code enforcement, and other municipal crimes. From arraignments through jury trials, this position manages an independent caseload alongside another Assistant Attorney, appears regularly in court, and works closely with the Juneau Police Department and other justice partners to promote public safety.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for an attorney who is committed to public service, demonstrates sound judgment and high ethical standards, and enjoys working in a collaborative environment. The successful applicant will be self-motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision, eager to learn local municipal and Alaska law, and comfortable in a fast-paced, paperless environment. Strong legal research, decision-making, and case management skills are essential.

WHY JOIN OUR TEAM?

The Juneau Law Department is a close-knit team of attorneys and paralegals handling approximately 1,100 criminal cases annually. The position offers substantial courtroom experience, meaningful responsibility from day one, and the opportunity to develop as a trial attorney while helping to protect the community. Prosecutors enjoy a practice focused on litigation and public service without the demands of billable hours.

This position is located in the heart of downtown Juneau between the mountains and the sea. Our office supports a healthy work-life balance with a standard Monday through Friday schedule and shared rotation of on-call responsibilities for weekend arraignments. Beyond the courtroom, Juneau offers an unmatched outdoor lifestyle with glaciers, mountains, hiking, skiing, boating, fishing, and abundant wildlife all within easy reach of the office.

RETIREMENT AND BENEFITS

This role offers a competitive salary package that includes the opportunity for regular pay increases, 13 paid holidays a year, an excellent health insurance program (medical, dental, vision and orthodontia care options), paid leave, and retirement credit through PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System). We value the health and well-being of our employees. The CBJ provides free parking, paid time off for parent-teacher conferences, childcare subsidies, the ability to participate in a robust wellness program that includes discounts to CBJ recreational centers and local fitness programs, free bi-annual health screenings, free flu shots, and healthy living challenges and webinars to assist you with achieving work/life balance.
