Job Description

Lab Summary:

The Patent Group at Samsung Research America (SRA) headquartered in Mountain View, CA provides intellectual property (IP) support for cutting-edge innovations in areas such as, e.g., artificial intelligence (AI), digital health, wireless communications, mobile security, and extended reality (XR). The group works closely with engineers, researchers, and leaders to secure and manage patent portfolios that safeguard the company’s technological advancements and competitive edge.

Position Summary:

As a patent agent or patent attorney at SRA, you will support SRA business units who are developing cutting-edge technologies.  You will be responsible for invention generation and improvement, evaluation of inventions, preparing sample claims for inventions, filing and prosecuting patent applications, managing outside counsel, performing patent analysis, advising on patent and copyright matters, and performing export clearance. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Identify and improve inventions, draft sample claims for inventions, lead the evaluation of inventions, and effectively communicate the details of the inventions to patent agents/attorneys in foreign offices.
  • Analyze prior art to determine the patentable scope of the inventions. Perform patent analysis (e.g., infringement, validity, and/or product clearance analysis), and identify possibly infringing third party products.
  • Manage outside counsel in the preparation of patent applications and office action responses.
  • Provide guidance on IP issues pertaining to patents and copyrights.
  • Perform export clearance for company’s technology and products.
  • Prepare and file provisional applications, and draft non-provisional patent applications and office action responses. Develop a deep understanding of the technologies of the business units that you will be supporting.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as generating status reports and reviewing invoices.

Required Skills:

  • BS/MS/PhD degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science with excellent academic credentials or a related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced technical degree will be a plus.
  • 3+ years of experience in identifying patentable subject matter, developing and improving inventions, patent application preparation, patent prosecution, patent portfolio management, and patent analysis. Must also understand good patent application drafting and prosecution techniques that result in patents that are valuable for litigation and licensing.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. A law degree (J.D) is not required for Patent Agent applicants.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with at least some of the following technologies: artificial intelligence, digital health (health and diseased monitoring), wireless communications, digital media, software/algorithms, AR/XR, mobile security, and user experience.
  • Must have personally drafted at least 25 non-provisional patent applications and 25 office action responses.
  • Experience with export compliance preferable but not required.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and drive to produce excellent work product in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural and team-oriented environment.
  • This position follows a hybrid work policy, requiring in-office attendance three days per week.

The base pay range for roles at this level is listed below, but may be higher or lower in other states due to geographic differentials in the labor market. Within the base pay range, individual rates depend on a number of factors—including the role’s function and location as well as the individual’s knowledge, skills, experience, education and training. This is part of our comprehensive compensation package with annual bonus eligibility and generous benefits to help you live life well.

$151,200$207,750 USD
