The Office of the Utah Attorney General has an immediate opening for an experienced investigator to serve as the Investigations Division Director (also referred to as Director of Law Enforcement Services or Chief of Investigations). Candidates must be POST certified as a Law Enforcement Officer upon application, and preference will be given to applicants with management experience in a law enforcement setting.
The incumbent in this job will formulate, implement, and manage the Attorney General's policies as the chief law enforcement officer of the State of Utah, as well as manage the Attorney General's criminal legislative initiatives. Incumbent will set policy and manage the Investigations Division and any relevant Community Programs. Incumbent will be responsible for any other pertinent law enforcement-related programs within the Attorney General's Office. Incumbent will also represent the Attorney General in state strategic law enforcement planning and interact with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Incumbent will report to the Criminal Deputy Attorney General.
The most qualified candidate is an expert level investigator with the ability to oversee a full range of investigative assignments, including but not limited to: investigations into allegations of individuals and businesses involved in a variety of crimes, inappropriate activities, rules infractions, illegal actions, or any other conduct that is in violation of laws and regulations of the state of Utah. Investigations typically include researching and gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and thoroughly documenting the investigative process; undercover operations; interpreting or establishing policies and investigative procedures; providing/conducting training; and may require serving as an expert witness. This position directly impacts the safety or welfare of the general public. - Responsibilities
- Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or work unit and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.
- Plans and manages projects and/or programs. Writes (or discusses) project/program plan(s), recommendation(s) and/or finding(s).
- Participates in establishing direction, goals, and policies. Meets with agency managers and directors to determine needs and challenges.
- Enforces laws, rules, and regulations.
- Coordinates law enforcement and investigative efforts with federal, state and/or local agencies.
- Conducts special investigations for the courts and/or boards and processes paperwork involved.
- Recommends, advocates and/or implements, new and or changes to existing policies and procedures, laws or regulations.
- Plans, develops and coordinates one or more large, complex projects.
- Supervises subordinate law enforcement personnel including: hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions.

- Job requires POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in Utah upon application.
- Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. working at great heights, working in extreme outdoor weather conditions, being subject to possible physical attack, etc.
- The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
