PARALEGAL III - PUBLIC RECORDS EMPHASIS - BISBEE
CLASSIFIED: Position is subject to the provisions of the Merit System Rules pursuant to Arizona Law
OPEN:  Thursday, November 7, 2024

RATE OF PAY: $21 hourly / $43,680.00 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package to include membership in the Arizona State Retirement System.

Under general supervision, performs paralegal work of considerable difficulty; performs related duties as assigned.


Essential Functions

TYPICAL DUTIES:  (Illustrative Only)   Coordinates public records requests and responds to subpoenas; serves as the Civil Division Database Coordinator; assists with zoning enforcement actions, adoptions and other civil legal matters; opens new case files and maintains calendars for all court dates and time limits on matters; researches legal questions; prepares recommendations; prepares drafts of motions and pleadings; conducts interviews; conducts investigations; participates in trial and pre-trial strategy; serves copies of pleadings; acts in a liaison capacity; prepares discovery requests and answers; coordinates educational activities; may supervise staff. 


Minimum Qualifications

An Associates Degree relating to Legal Assistant or Paralegal from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education; five (5) years of experience as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal; must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license and the ability to be covered by county insurance; must possess or have the ability to obtain a fingerprint clearance card. 

An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: 

  • state, civil, and criminal law, judicial procedures and methods of legal research;
  • legal terminology and forms;
  • the rules of evidence;
  • principles and practices of supervision;
  • modern office practices and procedures and equipment;
  • business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammatical usage
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and TEAMS. 

 Considerable skill in:

  • analyzing and interpreting legal documents;
  • interpreting statutory and regulatory requirements;
  • preparing summaries of legal opinions from previous cases.

 Good skill in:

  • data collection;
  • the use of word/data processing systems;
  • operating standard office machines;
  • organizing and managing case files. 

 Ability to: 

  • perform accounting functions;
  • plan work and work independently;
  • establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, other agencies and the public;
  • prepare and maintain accurate record and reports;
  • formulate concise queries;
  • follow written and verbal instruction;
  • read, write and speak English;
  • communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 

WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Mental Application:  Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important.
