Job Description

 King and Queen County is seeking a full-time Paralegal/Legal Assistant for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. This position is supervised by the Commonwealth Attorney and assists with case and court preparation, works with defense counsel, and other Commonwealth Attorneys.  The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with all parties including criminal justice agencies and court clerks. 


Duties include typing, filing, docket management, data entry in case management system, interaction with defense counsel and other Commonwealth’s Attorneys, assisting office attorney with case and court preparation, and maintaining a good working relationship with other criminal justice agencies and court clerks. Must have good organizational skills. Must pass criminal background check.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS


  • Acts as department receptionist; greets office visitors and provides technical and routine information concerning department operations, programs, policies and procedures.
  • Schedules appointments; arranges and makes necessary preparations for meetings and conferences.
  • Operates personal computer and a variety of office equipment.
  • Word processing maintaining complex and/or confidential records and files.
  • Compiles data and prepares reports. 
  • Establishes and maintains department filing systems
  • Enters a variety of department records and data into computer 
  • Handles and processes confidential and sensitive information
  • Orders department equipment and supplies at the request of the Commonwealth Attorney
  •  Performs other related duties and tasks as directed by the Commonwealth Attorney. 



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


Thorough knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to perform and organize work independently; ability to prepare effective correspondence on routine matters and to perform routine office management details. Skill in the use of personal computer hardware and software and general office equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.


GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:


Performs difficult skilled clerical and administrative work assisting with a variety of complex office assistance and administrative tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.  


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive office assistance experience. Paralegal or prior judicial system experience preferred. 


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


Must be able to pass a criminal background check.


Participates in emergency response operations as required in a declared emergency by County officials.
