Claims Counsel
Job Summary
Seeking a motivated, analytical, and relationship-driven Claims Counsel to join a growing Claims Advocacy team at a commercial insurance organization. This opportunity is ideal for an attorney who enjoys the legal and analytical aspects of claims and values client service, collaboration, empathy, professional development, and long-term career growth.
The Claims Counsel will work closely with clients throughout the claims process, helping them understand what is happening, identifying potential issues early, evaluating coverage and litigation developments, and collaborating with insurance carriers, TPAs, defense counsel, and other claims professionals to support appropriate resolutions.
The team emphasizes quality over volume and delivers a white-glove experience to clients from the moment a loss occurs through final resolution. The successful candidate will combine sound legal judgment with strong interpersonal skills, thoughtful communication, analytical thinking, and a genuine desire to help clients navigate complex claims.
This is not a traditional high-volume litigation or production claims environment. The role encompasses complex litigated and non-litigated matters and includes administrative and internal support, enabling Claims Counsel to focus more on analysis, strategy, advocacy, communication, and client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Provide claims advocacy and strategic guidance throughout the lifecycle of complex commercial insurance claims.
- Monitor and evaluate litigated and non-litigated claims, identifying key issues, exposure, coverage considerations, and recommended next steps.
- Analyze insurance policies, coverage issues, contracts, legal developments, claim facts, and supporting documentation.
- Conduct and support complex analyses of coverage and policy interpretations.
- Provide litigation oversight and collaborate closely with defense counsel, carriers, TPAs, clients, and other claims professionals.
- Review litigation developments, reserves, settlement strategy, exposure, and opportunities for resolution.
- Prepare clear, concise written assessments, recommendations, reports, and client communications.
- Communicate complex legal, coverage, and claims issues clearly and practically.
- Participate in claims reviews, strategy meetings, mediations, settlement discussions, and client presentations.
- Advocate with carriers and claims professionals to help ensure timely and appropriate resolutions.
- Develop a detailed understanding of each client’s operations, insurance program, risk profile, and claims philosophy.
- Build trusted client relationships by demonstrating responsiveness, empathy, sound judgment, professionalism, and consistent follow-through.
- Review claim data, financial information, reserves, trends, and other relevant metrics to identify exposures, patterns, and opportunities to improve outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with experienced coverage attorneys and internal support staff members.
- Identify opportunities to improve claims management processes, reporting, communication, and client service.
- Use technology and emerging tools, including AI-enabled resources where appropriate, to enhance research, analysis, communication, and efficiency.
- Travel occasionally for client meetings, claims reviews, mediations, and other business-related activities.
Qualifications / Requirements
- J.D. required.
- Active bar admission in good standing.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant legal experience.

- Experience with litigation strategy or oversight.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to analyze complex legal, factual, financial, and claims-related information and to communicate conclusions clearly and concisely.
- Strong presentation skills and professional presence.
- Sound judgment and the ability to balance advocacy with diplomatic skill.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships.
- An analytical mindset and comfort reviewing data, trends, reserves, exposures, and other claim-related financial information.
- Comfortable with technology and open to adopting emerging tools, including AI, to improve efficiency and decision-making.
- High levels of empathy, curiosity, accountability, resilience, and integrity.
- Collaborative working style with the ability to contribute effectively to a small, highly experienced team.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while staying responsive and maintaining attention to detail.

Culture / Fit
- Authenticity, resilience, curiosity, integrity, kindness, collaboration, and a commitment to solving problems rather than merely identifying them.
- An intentionally collaborative environment that emphasizes professional balance, long-term relationships, continuous learning, and high-quality work.
- Empathetic and genuinely interested in helping people navigate difficult situations; confident in advocating when necessary without creating unnecessary conflict; curious and willing to ask thoughtful questions; collaborative, analytical, solution-oriented, technologically adept, and committed to building a long-term career within a growing organization.
- A fighter when the situation requires it, but also someone who knows when a thoughtful, measured, and empathetic approach yields a better outcome.
