Pierce County District Court is a court of limited jurisdiction hearing the following cases:

  • Traffic and non-traffic infractions
  • Criminal and criminal-traffic misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors
  • Civil matters for damages for injury to individuals or personal property, and contract disputes no greater than $100,000
  • Small claims for recovery of money not to exceed $10,000
  • Name changes
  • Antiharassment protection orders
  • Stalking protection orders


How to be Successful in the Role:

The role in the courts is ever evolving, and this position will require problem-solving and critical thinking to stay current and ahead. Advanced planning skills are a must, as well as being able to adapt and adjust as needed to last-minute changes in circumstances. A successful employee will be an excellent communicator who is able to collaborate well within the court and all branches of government. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with judges, management, employees, stakeholders, and the public. You will need to provide strong leadership and mentorship while managing changing priorities, addressing employee needs, and ensuring we are consistent in court processes.
  
Throughout your employment, you will receive direct, constructive feedback from peers and your supervisor to facilitate your success and allow you to meet your professional goals.

District Court has access to numerous training opportunities, which include our leadership certification programs, online LinkedIn Learning courses, and official Pierce County training, as well as access to established procedures, standards, practices, and system documentation. Our training program is designed to help you develop as both a professional in your role as a Legal Processing Assistant 4 and as a Pierce County employee. Your work will directly impact your community and it offers a great foundation for future positions within the District Court and Pierce County.

 

Core Daily Responsibilities:

  • Requires a thorough knowledge of all policies and procedures governing the functions of the court and all of its divisions. Requires knowledge of the general policies and procedures governing the functions performed within the court.
  • Requires an outstanding ability to deal with complex factors and the ability to make decisions based upon conclusions for which there is little precedence.
  • Interprets court policy and applies it to the daily operation of the administrative activity. Establishes objectives and develops programs to accomplish these objectives.
  • Requires a continuous application of a significant degree of independent judgment. Makes decisions relating to the interpretation of court policy.
  • Has continual contact with the Judges, court officials and contact with outside individuals of a somewhat extensive nature

Minimum Qualifications

  • Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in a court setting
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation of the district/municipal court and all aspects of case processing activity, thorough knowledge of modern office practices, ability to make consequential work decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and court policies and procedures, ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships, skill in the operation of all equipment used in the office operation.
