Position Description: Reporting to a Supreme Court Justice, the Staff Attorney will work jointly with the Justice: studying appellate briefs, reviewing the record on appeal, performing legal research, discussing issues of law, and preparing drafts of opinions. Candidates should possess and demonstrate superior legal research and writing skills. This is a permanent position, rather than “term.”
FLSA Exemption: Exempt
Salary: SCAD-2022-40
Responsibilities and Essential Functions will include (but not be limited to) the following:
Conducting legal research, analysis, and writing.
Assess complex and novel legal issues and discuss with Justice.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned by Justice.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements:
Strong analytical, problem solving, issue spotting, and critical thinking skills.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills and collaborative skills. Excellent grammatical and citation skills.
Ability to prioritize and manage projects and deliver results with minimal supervision.
Ability to research and compose well-written communications, suitably adapted to the audience, covering a variety of novel topics.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Juris Doctorate; current license to practice law in Oklahoma or ability to become licensed.
Travel: All Supreme Court positions have the potential to and expectation of requiring employees to travel for normal duties in support of the Judiciary, including and not limited to state Judicial events and national industry conferences.
Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, and smartphones.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, comprehend, observe, and evaluate. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, operate standard office and computer equipment, and bend or stand on a step stool as necessary.
