Job Description:
Conduct a probable cause review of all charged domestic violence offenses.
Review reports where the defendant was not on the scene to determine if there is probable cause to file charges.
Prepare plea offers based on case facts, defendant criminal history, and conversation with victims before the defendant’s arraignment.
Speak with all victims that request to speak with the domestic violence prosecutor.
Draft appropriate motions to ensure case specific victim safety.
Work with law enforcement to ensure court orders are being properly enforced.
Represent Kansas City, Kansas in specialized domestic violence dockets.
Maintain a productive diversion program that reflects the evolving research and ordinance language surrounding domestic violence.
Oversee divertee progress through diversion program.
File diversion revocations in cases where divertee is not adhering to diversion contract.
Represent the City in all domestic violence motions, hearings, trials, and appeals, both appellate and district court.
Speak with victims and witnesses before trial or hearing to explain the process and prepare them to testify.
If a case was declined or dismissed, explain the reasoning to victims.
Confer with District Attorney’s Office to track defendant’s with cases in both Municipal and District Court.
Attend domestic violence trainings and conferences.
Track how all time is spent and report time used for domestic violence prosecution.
Create VAWA Grant Narrative and goals.
Track and report progress on VAWA Grant goals on quarterly reports.
All stages of prosecution of non-domestic violence criminal cases, cover for other attorneys to include traffic, code enforcement cases, etc.
Qualifications:
Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed. License to practice law in Kansas and a Juris Doctorate degree required.
Salary Range:
$31.06-$42.40/hr.
