District of Columbia Courts See More Job Openings by This EmployerThe Family Law Attorney is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Self-Help Center and the supervision of staff, ensuring compliance with requirements of all relevant statutes, regulations, rules, and policies. This position is located in the Self-Help Center of the Family Court Operations Division.The Center is responsible for providing free walk-in service to unrepresented people with general legal information in a variety of family law matters.
Duties
Brief Description of Major Duties:
- Along with the Office of the Family Court Director and the Family Court Management Team, shares responsibility for the overall effective accomplishment of the mission of the Center and the Family Court Operations Division.
- Provides direct supervision of all unit employees; plans, delegates, and evaluates work to be accomplished by subordinates; and sets and adjusts work priorities.
- Ensures that all Self-Help Center procedures comply with requirements of all relevant statutes, regulations, rules and business practices.
- Monitors and ensures the accuracy of caseload, workload, and performance data reports and statistics.
- Evaluates policies, procedures, practices, etc., and makes recommendations to the Family Court Supervisory Attorney for improvement.
- Participates in conferences and meetings to enhance the development of the Center.
- Collaborates with managers within Family Court Operations Division and other divisions of the D.C. Courts, as well as with other public and private agencies, as needed, to coordinate shared work-related programs and objectives of the court.
- $117,962 - $153,354/year
- Background and security investigation are required.
- A probationary period of one (1) year must be successfully completed.
- Active D.C. Bar membership.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar, and a minimum of three (3) years of legal experience, of which one year (1) must be in Family Law. Plus, two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Graduation from the Courts' Management Training Program may substitute for one (1) year of supervisory experience. You must provide documentation of your management training (i.e. copy of certificate) with your application.

Rule T of DC Superior Court Rules states: neither the Clerk nor the Clerk's assistants, nor anyone serving as a law clerk or secretary to a judge of this Court, or employed in any other capacity in this Court, shall engage in the practice of law while continuing in such position

After three years of service this increases to six (6)hours biweekly, and at 15 years it increases to eight(8)hours biweekly. Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category. Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year. Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes. Full-time employees earn four(4)hours of sick leave biweekly. This leave can be accrued without limit. In addition to the federal health plans, the DC Courts offer employees supplemental vision and dental plans as well as a commuter transit benefit subsidy, for a maximum of $150 a month. There are 26 pay periods in the year.
