Job Overview
The Counsel, Real Estate provides legal support to Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Bluemercury on real estate–related matters, with a primary focus on real estate leasing, the negotiation of reciprocal easement agreements and other mall operating agreements, and a broad range of real estate contracts. This role also advises on miscellaneous real estate matters and manages disputes across all company functions.
What You Will Do
- Advise and support cross-functional teams across Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Bluemercury on a broad range of real estate matters, including commercial leasing; acquisitions and dispositions of real property; reciprocal easement and supplemental agreements; tax and CAM issues; government condemnations; and other legal matters affecting the company’s real estate portfolio.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of real estate contracts, with a strong emphasis on new retail leases and amendments to existing leases.
- Advise the real estate business team on letters of intent for new retail leases.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and provide support to the Litigation team on real estate–related disputes.
- Provide support on additional legal matters and strategic initiatives as needed.
- Maintain regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.

Skills You Will Need
Commercial Real Estate & Retail Leasing Expertise – Significant experience advising on commercial retail leasing, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating new retail leases and amendments within a complex retail real estate portfolio.
Shopping Center & REA Experience – Deep knowledge of reciprocal easement agreements, mall operating agreements, and legal matters related to regional and super-regional shopping center real estate.
Real Estate Transactions & Portfolio Management – Experience supporting acquisitions, dispositions, condemnations, and other transactional matters affecting large-scale real estate portfolios.
Contract Drafting & Negotiation – Proven ability to draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of real estate agreements, balancing legal risk with business objectives.
Legal Analysis & Risk Management – Strong ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues, assess risk, and deliver practical, business-focused legal advice.
Litigation Support & Dispute Management – Experience serving as a subject matter expert on real estate litigation and partnering effectively with litigation teams.
Business Partnership & Cross-Functional Collaboration – Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with business leaders and cross-functional partners across multiple brands and functions.
Communication & Executive Presence – Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely for internal and external audiences and advise stakeholders at all levels.
Strategic & Independent Thinking – Ability to think independently, creatively, strategically, and technically while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Leadership & Influence – Strong leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence outcomes and work effectively across functional lines and organizational levels.
Who You Are
- Candidates with a Juris Doctorate (JD) are encouraged to apply. 6 plus years of relevant law firm or in-house experience and in good standing with a state bar.
- Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
- Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
