Job Description

ABOUT THE ORLEANS PARISH DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE (OPDA):
Jason Rogers Williams took office as the Orleans Parish District Attorney on January
11, 2021, and is building a 21st century prosecutors' office with a team of the best and brightest from around the country and a mission of being as smart on crime as the office has historically been tough on crime. New Orleans has led the world in convictions and incarceration for decades, without any corresponding decrease in crime. OPDA is simultaneously increasing safety and delivering justice with a laser focus on serious offenses and a belief that every New Orleanian deserves the presumption of innocence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) represent the State of Louisiana in criminal matters before courts with jurisdiction in Orleans Parish. OPDA's Homicide Unit consists of specialized prosecutors and support staff who prosecute complex homicide cases in Orleans Parish. The unit provides compassion, continuity, subject matter expertise, and vigorous prosecution, seeking justice on behalf of homicide victims and their families. This position reports to the Chief of Homicide and works closely with Homicide staff and law enforcement partners.

The District Screening ADAs are assigned to one of OPDA's eight regional Police Districts. ADAs will be the primary point of contact / liaison with the NOPD District Commanders and will be expected to represent the OPDA at all levels within that district. This may include attending off-site meetings at NOPD district level, neighbor associations, business organizations, citizens groups and the like. As crime may occur unevenly across the various NOPD districts, the District Screening ADA may be tasked with assisting their fellow District Screening ADAs with screening caseload/overflow as needed.

Typical duties include reviewing homicide cases for prosecution, interacting with victims, witnesses, and law enforcement; consulting with medical and scientific experts; seeking indictments via grand jury presentations; drafting motions and other pleadings; preparing discovery; appearing in court with regularity; developing trial strategies and conducting plea negotiations; conducting jury selection and trials; participating in regular "charge conferences" with detectives; and performing other duties as necessary or required for effective public service.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Member of the Louisiana Bar in good standing
  • Comfort with technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weeks over 40 hours
  • Dependability in attendance and work product
  • Public speaking ability and effective communication skills
  • Commitment to seeking justice for victims and their families
  • Proficiency in Louisiana criminal law and procedure
  • Extensive trial/courtroom experience, including experience handling complex criminal prosecutions

Criminals prosecuting experience strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high caseload and voluminous case files in a fast-pace environment

SALARY

$105,000 - $115,000

BENEFITS:
