Summary:The City of Lawrence is seeking a motivated Assistant City Attorney. This person will play a valuable role in offering legal advice and support to elected officials and City staff, including members of the Police Department and the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department. Responsibilities:Key responsibilities are drafting ordinances, conducting legal and policy research, preparing legal memoranda, providing training to City staff on legal matters, monitoring and addressing recent developments in law, representing the City in court, being available to respond to officers' calls outside of regular business hours, and attending evening meetings as required. The work of the Assistant City Attorney focuses on legal matters pertaining to general municipal law, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, open records law, and contract law. Qualifications:This position requires a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, two years of municipal legal experience or equivalent, and a law license in good standing in Kansas. Candidates must also have strong legal research skills, oral and written communication skills, analytical skills, and the ability to manage various assignments in a dynamic environment. Preference is given to candidates with government experience and civil or criminal law practice. A resume, cover letter, and a writing sample of a legal document are required for consideration. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate must also pass the background check and post-offer physical and drug screen.
