Job Description

Our nationwide law firm, headquartered in New York, is dedicated to consumer protection and employment law, with a strong focus on advocating for clients facing financial and personal challenges due to inaccurate data reporting. With over 40 years of combined experience and more than $100 million recovered for clients, we specialize in tackling issues like erroneous background checks, inaccurate credit reports, identity theft, debt collection harassment, and workplace disputes. Operating on a contingency basis, we ensure access to justice without upfront costs, serving clients across the United States with a client-centered approach that prioritizes clear communication and impactful results.

We are seeking a skilled Consumer Protection Attorney licensed in California to join our dynamic team, focusing on consumer protection cases involving inaccurate data reporting, such as errors in background checks, credit reports, financial disputes, and criminal records. The ideal candidate will be based in or near Queens, NY, with the flexibility to travel to California occasionally for case-related matters. This role involves managing cases from start to finish, with support from paralegals, to deliver justice for clients harmed by data companies’ errors, including those related to car accidents, payment disputes, or false criminal records. The Consumer Protection Attorney will play a critical role in holding corporations accountable under laws like the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and other consumer protection statutes.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a full caseload from initiation to resolution, including client consultations, case investigations, filings, negotiations, and litigation as needed.
  • Represent clients in lawsuits against data companies for inaccurate reporting, such as erroneous background checks, credit report errors, payment disputes, or false criminal records.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to build strong cases under consumer protection statutes, including the FCRA, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), and other relevant laws.
  • Draft and file legal documents, including complaints, motions, and settlement agreements, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Collaborate with paralegals to gather evidence, review documentation, and prepare for hearings or trials.
  • Negotiate settlements with opposing counsel to secure favorable outcomes for clients, including compensation for financial and emotional harm.
  • Communicate regularly with clients to provide updates, explain legal processes, and ensure their needs are met throughout the case.
  • Travel to California as needed for court appearances, depositions, or client meetings (travel frequency varies but is occasional).
  • Stay updated on developments in consumer protection and data privacy laws to maintain expertise in the field.
  • Work closely with the firm’s nationwide team to ensure consistent, high-quality legal representation.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active California bar license in good standing (required); additional bar licenses in other states, particularly New York, are a plus.
  • Ideally based in or near Queens, NY, with willingness to travel to California occasionally.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in consumer protection, litigation, or related fields, with a focus on cases involving data companies, background checks, credit reporting, or financial disputes.
  • Proven ability to manage cases from start to finish, including client communication, legal research, drafting, and courtroom advocacy.
  • Strong understanding of consumer protection laws, including the FCRA, FDCPA, and other relevant statutes.
  • Excellent negotiation skills with a track record of securing favorable settlements.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, remote-friendly environment with paralegal support.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to explain complex legal matters to clients and opposing parties.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle multiple cases and meet deadlines effectively.
Compensation
  • Base Salary: $150,000 annually.
  • On-Target Earnings (OTE): $200,000–$225,000 with performance-based bonuses tied to case outcomes and settlements.
  • Benefits: Comprehensive healthcare coverage, including medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Retirement: 401(k) plan with employer matching contributions.
  • Additional Perks: Professional development opportunities, including continuing legal education (CLE) support, and reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses related to casework.
