This position is primarily responsible for handling an advanced level of legal work concerning the economic relationship between consumers and businesses. Examples include highly complex and challenging antitrust and social medial platform cases against the largest corporations in America. In many circumstances, negotiations must take place with entire industry groups, including banks, insurance companies, automobile manufacturers, drug companies, etc. 

This position is responsible for formulating strategy and managing the implementation of that strategy regarding traditional consumer protection matters. In addition, as important consumer protection problems come to the fore, this position is responsible for analyzing the impacts of the problem, devising legal responses, and then supervising the response, up to and including litigation, from investigators, specialists, and possibly other attorneys. 

This position is responsible for liaison on critical consumer protection issues with other state agencies and officials, federal and Congressional officials, other states, and all other relevant parties. This position is responsible for devising and carrying out legislative and administrative strategies to respond to North Carolina citizens’ critical economic needs.

This position will also:

•   This position will prepare, file, and litigate cases in trial and appellate courts in areas including but not limited to antitrust, robocalls, telephone solicitation, technology, healthcare, and consumer fraud, where negotiation of appropriate settlement is not possible.
•    Manage the implementation of strategies developed within the Division regarding traditional consumer protection matters and arising problems. This position is responsible for analyzing the impacts of the problem and recommending responses.
•    Effectively develop legislative responses to the North Carolina General Assembly and provide administrative responses before state and federal agencies.
•    Work in partnership across the agency to coordinate legislative, legal, and administrative actions with other staff on behalf of the Attorney General's Office.

The salary grade for this position is LG09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  Please detail ALL work history including non-state service experience.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT RANGE OF $92,917 to $115,937. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Ability to conduct complex civil or criminal litigation in trial and appellate courts. 
Ability to interpret and apply laws, constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, and court decisions.
Ability to analyze complex legal problems and render formal opinions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and four years of progressively responsible professional legal experience.

Veterans Preference: Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a copy of their DD-214 or discharge orders.
 
Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.  If you are a former member of the NC National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, you must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
