Lila Sciences is looking for a Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Product specializing in legal strategy for AI models, agentic products and autonomous labs. In this role, you will be the primary legal partner for product and engineering teams developing products and services enabled through the training, validating, and use of AI models, agents and autonomous labs. You will help ensure that our technology, platform and labs operate within legal and regulatory expectations while enabling Lila to move quickly and responsibly. This position supports work spanning model development, infrastructure, data governance, robotics, autonomous lab integration, and global compliance.
What You'll Be Building
- Provide legal guidance on product decisions involving AI models, agents and complex data assets across their lifecycle, from concept to public or commercial use
- Advise on data acquisition, rights management, licensing, use of open and synthetic data, and compliance with intellectual property and data protection laws
- Establish risk governance practices that support safety reviews, misuse prevention, monitoring, and remedial action where needed
- Lead cross functional reviews involving product, research, engineering, and operations to evaluate legal and compliance risks associated with major initiatives
- Stay current on emerging legal standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices in AI, data privacy, export control, and related technical domains, and advise leadership accordingly
- Support alignment of legal and compliance approaches for systems that integrate AI models and agents with autonomous lab workflows
- Advise on legal and regulatory considerations for autonomous robotics systems operating in laboratory environments, including safety compliance and equipment standards
What You’ll Need to Succeed
- Juris Doctor or equivalent legal degree and active membership in good standing with a bar
- At least fifteen (15) years of legal experience that includes advising on technology or data driven products in law firm, corporate, or regulatory settings
- Deep knowledge of global data protection laws such as GDPR, CCPA or CPRA, UK GDPR, and rules governing cross border data transfers
- Proven ability to work directly with product, engineering, research, and operations teams in technical environments
- Possess working knowledge of key legal frameworks relevant to AI products and governance
- Demonstrated ability to balance legal and compliance considerations against product and business objectives while supporting innovation
Bonus Points For
- Experience developing and implementing governance frameworks for AI systems and data assets
- Familiarity with AI risk or safety standards and industry approaches to responsible AI deployment
- Prior engagement with regulators, industry groups, or standards bodies on technology policy or regulatory interpretation
- Exposure to regulated scientific domains, laboratory systems, or research infrastructure legal matters
- Prior work at a company with significant robotic automation or autonomous systems
- Experience building or scaling legal functions focused on product and regulatory compliance

Expected Base Salary Range
$320,000 - $440,000 USD
