RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform legal research and writing to assist AUSAs with pleadings, briefs, and responses
- Draft filings for the U.S. District Court and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals
- Focus on post-conviction and appellate matters under 18 U.S.C. §§ 2255 and 3582
- Support AUSAs in cases involving motions to vacate or modify sentences
- Develop knowledge of applicable law and DOJ policy to prepare accurate pleadings
- Maintain awareness of changes in law and DOJ policy impacting appellate matters
- Review case files and conduct research to prepare drafts for AUSA review
- Assist the Appellate Chief in preparing guidance for AUSAs on legal developments
- Provide advice on DOJ policy updates affecting appellate and post-conviction cases
- Support the Appellate Chief and AUSA Supervisors in reviewing pleadings for accuracy
- Ensure uniformity and compliance of pleadings prepared by AUSAs
- Report directly to the Appellate Chief of the USAO-WDMI
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of federal criminal law and procedure
- Excellent legal research and writing skills
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience working as a paralegal or attorney
- Experience conducting independent research and writing
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience with appellate legal work
- Undergraduate degree is required
- Law Degree is preferred

- U.S. citizenship is required as it supports the U.S. federal government
