Position Purpose

The Legal Services Program (LSP) Staff Attorney shall provide competent legal services and zealous representation and advocacy for all LSP clients. “Advocacy” shall include not only legal representation but also any other services the Staff Attorney can perform in furtherance of the client’s stated objectives. The Staff Attorney will maintain a status in good standing with the Wisconsin Bar and take an active role in public interest law organizations and advocacy in the community. The LSP Staff Attorney must be willing and able to travel to Greater Wisconsin Vivent Health offices to provide legal services, legal representation, and educational outreach.

Regular Duties include: conducting case intake assessments, maintaining case files in an orderly fashion, respecting client confidentiality, making appropriate client referrals to other programs within Vivent Health and other legal services programs in the community, collaborating with the Director of LSP and Vivent Health attorneys on cases, drafting legal documents, conducting presentations for clients, staff and community members, actively participating in legal community organizations, providing guidance to LSP interns, and competently representing clients in HIV discrimination, housing, advance directives, estate planning, Social Security disability appeals, and any other tasks assigned by the Director of LSP. 

 

Essential Functions

  • Provide competent, professional, and ethical legal assistance to clients throughout the state of Wisconsin
  • Maintain and organize case files in a timely and orderly fashion, and document all activities appropriately
  • Conduct regular educational presentations on assigned topics to a variety of audiences
  • Represent LSP clients in all legal proceedings in accordance with the protocols and procedures of the relevant legal body, Court, or Administrative Law Judge, the Code of Professional Responsibility, the Wisconsin State Bar, and the American Bar Association

 

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years' experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Law Degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Member in good standing with the State Bar of Wisconsin
  • Admitted to practice in the Federal Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, or eligible for admission
  • A minimum of (2) years of legal experience
  • Working knowledge of Wisconsin Law and Courts and the Seventh Federal Circuit Court System
  • Experience with a legal services program that provides low/no cost legal services
  • Knowledge of the legal issues faced by People Living with HIV/AIDS
  • Experience advocating for the rights of under-served populations
  • Experience with Social Security determinations, landlord-tenant issues, evictions, wills, POAs, advanced directives

 

Salary:

Starting at $75,000/annually (Depending on Experience)
