Law degree (JD) from an accredited institution; admission in good standing to the Kentucky Bar or eligible for admission within six (6) months and six (6) years of experience as a practicing attorney. Grade 14 (Salaried)

Position Description:

The Office of University Counsel is accepting applications for an Associate University Counsel position reporting to the Deputy General Counsel. The successful candidate will be expected to provide legal advice on a wide range of legal matters impacting a metropolitan research institution of higher education, with a primary focus on overseeing litigation matters handled by outside counsel, providing guidance and oversight of employment-based immigration matters, and handling internal and external administrative matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as the practice leader for the litigation and immigration practice groups. Subject to strategic direction of the General Counsel, will provide management and oversight of university litigation undertaken by outside counsel.

  • Provide representation of the University in agency matters and/or administrative due process hearings.

  • Provide internal guidance and handling of University’s immigration matters, with a focus on employment visas.

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to administrators regarding a wide-range of issues impacting a metropolitan research institution of higher education.

  • Assist in providing training on compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws.

  • Will assist on other legal matters, including employment, contracts, open records, risk management, and campus-wide policies and procedures.

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to Human Resources on a wide range of employment issues, including but not limited to, EEO, ADA, employee relations and Title IX matters. Supervises assigned personnel within the Office of University Counsel.

The successful candidate must also demonstrate the highest level of integrity and professionalism, possess superior communication skills, have the demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and professional manner with peers and clients, have a record of academic and professional excellence, and have an interest in practicing higher education law in a general office of a major public university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a litigator and/or employment attorney or in the capacity of an in-house counsel managing litigation.

  • Experience with employment matters and contracts in the context of higher education, state government agencies, or other large non-profit institutions.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
